The iconic Battleship Texas was once again on the move this week, albeit not for long or very far. On Thursday morning, the 110-year-old warship was relocated to its new, short-term home Pier A from Pier D, which are only a quarter mile apart, at the Gulf Copper Dry Dock & Rig Repair in Galveston as part of the next phase of its extensive repair and restoration. The historic ship will remain at Pier D until it reopens or just before, according to the Battleship Texas Foundation.
“We will be continuing work on the superstructure and wood decking, as well as revitalizing the inside of the ship and transforming spaces into the brand new on-board museum,” a spokesperson with the Battleship Texas Foundation told Chron. “There is no plan for the ship to be moved again until we get to our new home.”
No spectator boats or pedestrians were allowed at the site or in the water during the ship’s move. However, its short voyage was best seen from Pier 21. Live feeds online, including on the Battleship Texas Foundation’s YouTube channel, also allowed those who were curious to witness the process from afar.
