I haven't gone skiing for about 10 years. I would say I am an intermediate level on downhill and I'm a terrible cross-country skier whose ability to telemark is embarressing.
Believe it or not learning to ski and going skiing once a week was part of my school curriculum back in Australia when I went to Geelong Grammar School at Timbertop, Victoria in year 9. We were only 45 mins from Mt Buller and Mt Stirling. |

I live witin two hours driving time of the best skiing in the USA, Breckenridge, Vail, Aspen and Telluride. Yet, I cannot bring myself to battle the traffic both on the road and in lift lines to pay $80.00 plus dollars for four or five hours of falling on my ass.

You didn't include an option for I am good or good enough. I am not terrible, but I am not pro or great, so I must choose great out of lack of options.

I spent eight years driving skiers to and from all the local resorts. I never had time to do it myself.

Dude, I was in that very Pass two years ago... Wow. It's 2 weeks into ski season and the unprepared are already dying.
But for the record: The area where this skier died was in the backcountry, i.e. an "out of bounds" wilderness area that is not owned by a ski-resort and is not patrolled by Ski Patrol. This is known as "Off-Piste" in Europe. People who ski in the backcountry should know the risks of doing so. You need to be prepared for the worst, with a beacon, shovel, and probe. You need to have a partner. You need to have decent knowledge of avalanche safety and the science of how they occur. You need to know when to hit a line and when to back off. You need to know how to save your friend. You need to know that one wrong turn and you could die. If you follow these precautions, you will probably survive. If you respect the mountains, they will be kind to you. But even so, freak accidents do occur out of bounds. Don't let this be a "reason" not to ski. A freak death miles away from help is different from being in a busy resort area. If you are a beginner, stick to the resorts and you will be fine . But backcountry is good fun as well. I've gone into the backcountry 6 times and am still alive to SubSim another day
