Humm, very interesting inded! There were Japanese Anti-Submarine aircraft equiped with Magnetic detectors during WWII, here's something did I didn't know of.

The captain of the U.S.S Halibut believes that his sub was detected by a MAD equiped aircraft, which resulted in his sub been damaged by the following attack that it was decommisened when it finaly got back to Pearl Harbour

He reported what sounded like a low flying aircraft before the attack began, but when he enquired if the Japanese has such a system, he was told no without any invesigation at all.
