Default Out of Depth Charges?

Ok i was caught on the surface by 4 DD's. Crash dived and after several hours of them dropping cans on me it stopped but I could still hear them above. They continued to cross directly over me for another hour, then I gave them the slip. Were they out of depth charges? (I don't remember if that was modeled or not).
