got nailed in a minefield. I figured that November 1939 was safe. Because, as it seemed, during september and october of that year I could move freely through the channel on surface or below.
But now it was november and I went through the channel. I made a karmic mistake - i surfaced in calm waters amongst about 5 warship sound contacts, and turned the deck gun on a trawler that happened to sail right over me. I got two shots off before a VW was in sight (perfectly clear still day 12noon) so I dove and continued out of there. I got away. I was on the north side of the channel (just slightly off the midline path, and I hit a mine. Big damage, sunk, came to rest, barely got my green crew to staunch the floods. Repaired, blew ballast, continued. TC --- MINE! Sink, fuel loss, battery damage, flooding, dead crew, came to rest, staunch flooding, do repairs, etc, blow ballast. When I surfaced this time there was a VW in sight and i split it in half with an angry torpedo. In the distance, a C2 was approaching, burning. It had a hit a mine i guess. Zooming in with the camera I watched it _brush_ a mine but not set it off. We were deep in a big goddamned minefield. Bastards. Just enough fuel to get back overnight on the surface at standard. But looking around me, there were mines _everywhere_. Every few hundred metres. Bad place. For friend and foe alike. No more channel for U-48. Time to replace my sound and radio men, and to forget my impending upgrade to IXB...last mission was a bust. Question - if you go _under_ mines, do they explode? Can I make it through the channel just scaping the bottom? What happens if you hit the chain? KB |

This is not tottally unrealistic as the British did use anti-u-boat mines that had attenna up to 20 metres long... though the exact lenght may be incorrect... All RUB minefileds are done as close to historical dates, sizes and locations as is possible. There are virtually 'make beleive' minefield locations, though there is at times some interpretation required regarding the exact location. While we are at it, I have had great difficulty getting minefield data, anyone got some laying around please let me know. |
