Default Catching up with the Mods

I'm a complete newbie when it comes to Mods, and while I thoroughly enjoy it, I play the vanilla version of SH3.

I don't even know what RuB stands for!

Sounds like I'm missing out on some great enhancements that people have put together, but I'm terrified of ballsing up the basic game

Could anyone lead me gently by the hand, in layman's terms, to the promised land? Or just get me started?

Thanks,

Raoul de Bunsen, U-46

Dear Kaptain,

The bDu is sending you to a upgrade class. You have to leave U46 for a while ... and also the charming Heidi.

So, Rub, means Real-U-Boat. This is a modded wich is transforming the bahaviors of sh3 like:
- no more automatic targeting.
- no ship view.
- real damage and repair times.
............

First of all, there is two kind of mods:
- the old ones, using a cut/past of files in specifics folders .... unwaranty of compatibility between mods....
- the new ones respects a kind of delivering layer in zip format and are compatible with a great tool call JSGME. You can find it at http://sh3essentials.realsimulation.com/ thanks to terrapin.

This tools is a GUI-MODS enabler for SH3. Backups are automaticaly created, compatibility is checked between mods ..... A MUST HAVE.

after that, mods give you avaibility to change almost every aspect of the games like:
- friendly harbor cruisde...
- new ships and skins...
- new weapons ...
- better AI....
...................

The vanilla SH3 1.4b is really outspaced when you used mods ....

And if, like me, you screw things up, you can always put in place your backup files ....

Give a try ...

Dismmiss, Kaptain.

The mod enabler is positively a must have. The only thing you have to watch out for is which mods are already set up for the enabler and which ones aren't. If they are not, it's an easy job of creating folders so that they can be used with it. Be sure to look at the readme for the enabler.

They're be another big mod coming out soon too. Should negate some of the confusion. I'll say no more...

Zu Befehl, Mein Herr!

Viele Danke

Enough with the O-level German already!

(By the way, and I'm not kidding, our German teacher was called Miss Kraut. She didn't stand a chance, I'm ashamed to say)

I'm not sure if I understand all of the terminology, but I'll give it a go.

So I won't be able to take the odd external view anymore? I know it's unrealistic, but still hard to resist.

Really need someone who knows what they're doing to to sit here, while I perch like an impatient kid in the back of a car on a trip to the sea. Which is kind of what I am, I suppose!

Are there any SH3 players out there who live in South London? There'd be beers in it !

Thanks again,

Raoul de Bunsen, U-46

RuB doesn't stop you playing with the external cam.

I wish there was some sort of external camera view that only allowed you to pan around your boat, but only to the height of your periscope. If you see what I mean.

I wish someone could copile most of the good mods into one package that when you download, automatically puts them into the right place, like a patch.

Humff, well...

this is mostly impossible, simply because .... what you like is maybe what I dislike, and vice-versa ....

What might be great would be a king of "patch builders", like the jsgme, but this might be to much harsh to code ....

Laughing Swordfish!

Salute! Sir

Before you do ANYTHING.... either copy your DATA folder to a new personal document folder. Or if you have space on your HD create a second install of SH3 there by right clicking "SilentHunterIII" in your Ubisoft directory, then copy and paste it beside the original.
It will then show "Copy of SilentHunterIII" which you can re-name to whatever you like such as "Testing Copy of SilentHunterIII."
You can then go into it and create a second desktop shortcut to that install.

Afterwards DON'T TOUCH your original install (except to add the 1.4b official patch from ubi-bug errr ubisoft I mean... if you haven't already.)

I have used this process extensively. It works and saves many headaches.

You can also copy the "SH3" folder that is generated in "My Documents" to a backup folder you create for use during your testing. Just swap'em back and forth!

Hello all,
besides playing this sim,I also play an old Akella RPG called SeaDogs.
They have a free MOD compilation out, with the latest patch added to it,that installs into your program files as opposed to the game files.
All that is needed to do is download it directly to your desktop then unzip,to the game ,following the easy to use directions. You then start up the SeaDogs compilation and activate /deactivate the MODs you want to use or not.
There is no need to backup files with it.
All you do then is start up the game as normal and play, the only downside is that you cannot use it with saved games.

The thing is that if I can use it and get it to play then a trained ape has no problem,no spurious intention inclined to anyone.
The reason why I mention it is that, not all people are computer literate,DLL literate,or get the gyst of how to use the JSGME,therefore not able to play the game with some of these excellent MODs that are available.
