Default Trigger-happy Gunners!

Whilst happily sneaking into on a British port near Southend to perform a little raiding action, my watch officer informed me that aircraft had been spotted in the area.

By rote, I assigned a crew to the flak guns, but did NOT order the "engage as default order" option. I assumed that some Hurricanes would show up to chase off the bombers. Thats something Ive actually seen before.

To my shock, I watched as my flak crew began to fire at the friendly bombers. They downed two before I was able to get the cease fire order out. Needless to say, I had to reload from my previous save.

Also, the same problem has happened in a surface action against a mixed convoy. My deck gun crew simply blasted green as well as red ships. I am trying to find the command that orders the gun crews to attack ONLY a designated target or confirmed enemy ships.

Any ideas?

I've had the samething happen to me. I set my flack and deck guns to fire at will. With 1.4b it appears that my gunner take that to me they have free reign to open up on whatever they want. I miss the old way.

During a convoy breakout from Alexandria Mission (insane... the entire British fleet shows up and blows everyone to bits).. my gunners not only shot at the Hurricanes, they also bagged a couple of Stuka's too before I could get the cease fire out...

Why, I don't know either... except their orders were fire at will at medium range...

Cordialement, Duke of Earl

I haven't encountered this before, not having seen both friendly and enemy aircraft in the skies at the same time, but I think what you'd have to do is assign a watch officer, then give him the order that the flak gunners only shoot targets making an attack run.

I guess if you just get them to 'target aircraft' then thats exactly what they'll do...shoot anything that flies.

Pardon me, after running the game again, the order you want to give the Watch Officer/flak gunner is 'attack closing targets'...I guess that'll reduce the chances of them shooting at friendlys...Hopefully.

BTW has anybody ever tried to take down a seagull with the flak gun ? Either i'm a useless shot, or it's impossible.

Kill a seagull!?

According to an old sailor's tradition, a seagull is the reincarnation of a sailor who died at sea, so killing or injuring one will bring bad luck for the rest of your days.

This bad luck usually manifests itself in a unique form of aerial bombardment, but given you're on a U-boat "the rest of your days" may not be as long as you thought.

Thanks Pablo I'll keep that in mind...always thought it was an albatross, but I'll leave the seagulls alone from now on, just in case.
