I always keep an eye on the fuel gauge. I like the large indicator; makes it more of a "guesstimate" than an actual hard number.
Hence, my question - Is it the bottom of the float that indicates fuel remaining, or the top? Common sense tells me that if it's an actual float, then the bottom is accurate. If it's some other device then ? It seems I come home to base with unused ordnance and 33% fuel left most patrols. Out of a fear of running out of diesel. I'd like to push those figures a bit harder. I hoist a Spaten dunkel to my fellow Kaleuns and await some guidance!

It seems to be the bottom when i compare my end patrol fuel to were the float is

You can always ask your navigator to give you your maximum range at your current speed. However, you need to be aware that the weather has an affect on this i.e. in calm weather the given range will be further than if the sea is rough. In a type VII your most fuel efficient speed is around 8 knots in ideal conditions.

Also, if you get upto flank speed, order all stop, then immediately ask for a fuel range, you get some insanely huge numbers.

LI reports the amount of fuel at least twice during the patrol. Once when the fuel load gets down to 50 % and then again when it gets down to 25%. You'll get an impression on the thing by looking at the gauge at those times. My feeling is that it is the middle of the float, but I could be wrong...
