Wouldn't it be interesting if they granted it? His plan is just weird enough to succeed.

I guess he just doesn't believe that the Swedes would go to all this trouble for such a weak rape charge if that was all that was motivating them.

Can't confirm it yet, it's just Facebook chatter but the scuttlebutt is that Ecuador has given the green light for asylum

I'm not sure that Ecuador has much legal basis to grant asylum as the Swedish charges are criminal, not political. He's claiming that the US may do something if he's in Sweden, but why haven't they done anything whilst in the UK? They've had over 12 months to put something up but nothing has eventuated. Why wait until he's in Sweden if they have the evidence now?

From Forbes:
Quote:
There is one part of the whole story which is really rather difficult to understand though. It’s not immediately obvious that Sweden is more likely to extradite him to the US than the UK is. The US/UK extradition treaty allows extradition upon reasonable suspicion as a number of people have found out. It also allows for extradition on the basis of crimes alleged to have been committed in the UK but being charged or tried in the US. There’s no evidence that Sweden’s extradition law is weaker in the protection of the rights of the accused than this.

It is also true that no extradition can or will be made from an EU country to a country that intends to seek the death penalty in any case. Prosecutors must drop that punishment option before any extradition can or will be agreed.

It’s the basic claim that Assange’s lawyers are making which is so confusing. What is it that makes anyone think that extradition from Sweden to the US will be any easier for US prosecutors than extradition from the UK?

in the event that assange's fears are justified, i think it is unlikely that the US intends at all to extradite him to the US.

But i think the US would put pressure on Sweden to find him guilty of the rape charge and make sure the prison sentence is long

Assange has done great injury to US prestige. The US wants him, like they want Manning. In the US, Assange could be sentenced to death, possibly. The rape laws in Sweden are a bloody joke in some parts, women can file charges even over claims that they felt uncomfortable afterwards, that is absurd and one of the most idiotic laws I ever have heared of. The claimed victims did not file charges so far, which is the most dubious. The whole case smells and stinks and looks so rotten that most likely it is rotten. If anyone thinks that the Swedes want him for only questioning, than I feel sorry.

And no, I do not like the man. By what we learned about his character by former colleagues describing him, I must not like him at all. But I like what he did, and think we need more of that getting done, because governments lie, hide, betray and cheat. He ripped off some masks from the US's face, and by revealing the contrast between claim and reality, he earned the desire for revenge by those whom he hurt, and whose illusions he hurt.

Revenge is what it is about, plain and simple.

Only when he's in Sweden and they are footing his costs for board and lodgings.

Somehow he needs to get from the Ecuadorian Embassy to an Airfield for a flight to Ecuador. That might be tricky.

I'm sure his aim is to stay out of Sweden regardless of what the US do.
