Default lol@AI torpedo bombers

I added operation iceberg(invasion of okinawa) landing force and multiple waves of japanese "kamikazes" as mentioned in another thread. Some B5N Kate torpedo bombers were in one group, I saw one diving, I figured hed crash into a ship like some of the others(yes they did) or come in low for a torpedo run, but apparently he forgot hes a torpedo pilot not a dive bomber pilot since he dropped his torpedo like a bomb.LOL I managed to get these shots. The hit eventually caused the troopship to sink lol.Kind of brings up an issue, would someone with the know how create accurate aircraft torpedoes for US and IJN as well as some way that they drop them properly in TMO RSRD.Thanks

lol they did it in stock, torpedo planes are just kind of rare in comparision to dive bombers. Are you running RSRD with RFB? RFB use stock campaign, if run RSRD with it, just have to watch closely. The big battles like Philippine Sea you will see them, both USN and IJN.Problem is, the torpedoes for aircraft are not accurately modeled. The IJN torpedo does not look like an IJN torpedo, they miss often and its wakeless. The USN torpedo bombers, looks more like a USN torpedo but no wake and the dont hit too often.I wish I knew where to even start but maybe someone will fix this eventually

I was shocked at this dumb behavior lol, only thing I can think is when I created the mission, I set their altitude to 3000 meters instead of 500 so since they would be flying over islands with mountains etc, planes are not intelligent enough to pull up lol, watched them run into many land masses.Savo Island in August 42, the Bettys from Rabaul that come in on the afternoon of the 7th to attack off guadalcanal, they were flying at meters and kept running right into savo island lol, had to go HAND EDIT their waypoints via notepad(PITA!) to change their course slightly so they would stop, lol.

I use to never see torp bombers in RSRD, then about a year ago playing with airstrike cfg. I now see them in campaign, but seems only when certain carrier types are around. Have no clue why or what setting actually did it or some fluke.

Yea, one torp plane drops them like a bomb, the other torp planes seem to work, don't think height matters.

Obvious in game they will attack you, often in mass, silly, but can ruin your day if one hits...I've only been hit once, but they do have good aim, probably drop about 1000-2000 yards from you. I also have seen them attack US TF with great effect taking out carriers, etc..

I've never concerned myself with it, but be interesting to see what controls what planes spawn from carriers and correct it, game
has many aircraft not used.

ive also noticed a strange behavior in TMO RSRD of japanese Betty bombers making dive runs on my sub and if they pull that maneuver where they try to pull up at a steep angle they just start and end over end flip, lose power, stall, then crash moments later and usually about 100 feet from the sub......the first time i saw it it was freaking hillareous. Then it kept happening with that specific type of bomber.

yea ive noticed that happening a lot as well, it sucks.Funny, but sucks. Also, I hate how the burn and keep flying like its nothing, IJN planes were pretty fragile usually, Bettys were often called zippos like the lighter

I think so, it was once an issue in TMO, think ducimus fixed it but since RSRD overwrites TMO, well yea.

Yea, I saw it 3 times last patrol

Yea, Duci tried to correct it in TMO, not sure which settings he adjusted and how they would connect to RSRD. Honestly, I seldom see it using RSRD, where in times past it was rather common, I assumed RSRD didn't overwrite Duci's corrections, but maybe I'm just lucky I seldom see it.

Any idea what controls US planes from Us airbases? I know airstrike.cfg controls japanese planes, I altered it in RSRD, I see planes now in most areas, unlike before.I would like to see PBY's patrolling around US bases.I added them to where they would locate the IJN force approaching Midway and one that always patrols around Pearl Harbor and the approaches, just an immersion thing. Also have IJN subs prowling along the natural routes subs would take(wish they could fire torpedoes at you, perhaps someone could do this, they made the PT boat do so) will be interesting to see a PBY attack an IJN sub.You can make subs submerged, problem is they cant dive and surface, either have to have them spawn submerged and travel submerged.I have the I-400 boats traveling as they did in in the last year of the war. Some areas they are submerged, will be fun, I sunk a submerged midget sub with a torpedo before, would be neat to get a ijn fleet sub.

Jeez, those torpedoes on the screenshots act more like tomahawks!

Well, I've never messed with US airbases, but I thought the airstrike file worked for both sides values. I assumed you would create airbases for the US same as jap.....I'll look into it.

I've played with submerging subs, but regardless of waypoints and speed they just stop and eventually sink and destroyed. What are you doing different.

Yes, Duci fixed the flying Ronsons in TMO. They don't dive attack anymore, they just pass overhead in proper level bomber attacks. And most of the time, outta range until they're almost overhead.

Wish we could get the floatplanes to do the same. The only planes that should be diving on you, are the Zekes, and Vals. The multiengined bomber / floatplanes should have their wings ripped off in those kinds of dives. They weren't made to do that. A shallow 20 degree dive maybe, but throttled back because not only for the stresses on the plan itself, but how heavy would the controls get for the pilot and or co-pilot.

But yes, Japanese planes did not last very long once they caught fire. No self sealing fuel tanks, so all it took was one incediary, or tracer an whoosh! They would go up like a torch, and the wing tanks, once burning, would usually cause the wing to fail on that side a few moments later.

What wold be cool, is on the multi-engined planes, to see engines get knocked out, and seize up, or the pilot feather them.
