A lot of the files for SH4 are no longer where they are listed in the posts or have become irrelavant since 1.5 so should I just through the game away?

no, buy the $5 update to v1.5 and use the hundreds of mods available for it.

v1.5 has been out for years and it fixes many old issues with the game so thats why you dont see any v1.4 mods anymore even though there are still some out there
