Reconfiguring her insides. Not another precious WW2 vintage war weapon undergoing changes to accomodate the tourists. Leave her in current config, block anything sensitive and let us see her for what she is. The last surviving example of a class of ships long lost to the seas. Well 20 years lost anwyay, actually how long have they had Iowa mothballed in San Fran?

16 years or so. All 4 of them had been mothballed prior to the Reagan administration, when they were re-activated.

Being from Iowa, I've always had a soft spot for this ship. I'm glad she's finally found a safe berth. I had feared the worst.

I saw her in the yards after the turret explosion. She is magnificent.

Not exactly the last, though. New Jersey (BB-62) is now a museum in Camden, NJ. USS Missouri (BB-63) is a museum ship in Pearl Harbor, overlooking the USS Arizona Memorial. USS Wisconsin (BB-64) is a museum ship in Norfolk, Virginia.

Remember that all of these ships were constantly upgraded ever since the end of World War 2 - Wisconsin and Missouri participated in Operation Desert Storm, firing in support of ground forces with gunnery and conducting strike missions with TLAM missiles.

Not sure how much interior configuration will be done, though I must confess my curiousity about how they will handle the tragedy in the Number Two 16" gun turret. It's my understanding that the turret was sealed in the months and years since the 1989 turret explosion; I would imagine it will remain so under the museum's care.

It amazes me that all four have been kept, I'd love to see one some day

The biggest vessel we've managed to keep in the UK is the 6" Town-class light cruiser HMS Berlfast

Jim, if you ever make it to Baltimore while I'm still here, I'll personally drive you up to New Jersey for a tour of that ship...

...provided it isn't yet closed by the State of New Jersey for lack of funding...
