how do you edit xxi

i am but a noob so dont crack up on my question.

how do you change the textures of the xxi? I have been able to edit type 2,7, and 9 files found in the tex folder. I tried to change colors on the xxi but it dosent work when i edit the tga file. I looked at some xxi skin mods for direction but they have .dat files and i have no clue how to change it. is there any tutorials? help a noob?

(what i am trying to do is change the upper hull, flak, and contower to the greenish color of the new israeli dolphin sub)

Use S3D to export the textures.
Then edit them to your delight and place the edited version in the tex folder.
Or use S3D to re-import them to the dat.
Your choice.
