Well, AN81 is the North Sea, after all. Realistically you would be expected to stay in the assigned grid for at least two weeks. I wait that long and only roll a die if I haven't seen any enemy shipping in that time. Then I only change grids on a 1, and it's an adjacent grid anyway.
You pays your money and you takes your chances.

Sailor Steve , I remember a list, of say, "personal realism rules" that you play by. I play by most of them, because there great. I wasn't too sure about how long you stayed in your grid, and when you rolled the dice. Now I'm feel'n like a weenie. I'm going to return. Tell the guys at the Post Office they can have the stuff in my locker and tell my wife I love her. LOL

I tried to find the post with the rules, because I thought there might be something I might start following too, but I didn't find them. Could you tell me about the rules or point to the post with them, Steve?

![]() ![]() Oh boy. I've been playing a few game days every day, so everything is fresh in my mind. Are you sure you're ready for this? Grid assignment: I go where I'm told. If I'm there for two weeks and if I haven't seen anything I roll a six-sider. On a '1' I consider myself ordered to an adjacent grid. Anything else and I'm there for another week, this time moving on a '1' or a '2'. And so on. Weather reports: Every day at the nearest hour to the one I departed at I make a position report. I use the GWX pull-down map with the little extra grid map to get the full location. Right in front of me is my latest: BF1311. Four game days ago, I kid you not, it really was BF1337. Anyway, I then add course and speed. Then weather. I use the Watch Officer to get the base weather, and then look at the wind speed. I roll another die. On a '3' or '4' it is what it is. On a '1' it's two m/s slower than what he said. On a '2' it's one m/s slower, and on a '5' or '6' it's one or two m/s faster. THEN...I keep in mind what time of year it is, because I'm using the Seasonal setting in SH3 Commander's version of the 'Big Waves' mod. June-July it's normal, August-September and April-May it's x1.25, October-November and February-March it's x1/5, December-January it's x2. So I get wind speeds as high as 30 m/s in winter, which matches what the waves look like with the mod. Two days ago, August 8, 1939, I was in BF1382, Course 255, Speed 4 kts, Sky Clear, Wind 19 m/s, Sea State 8, Waves 5 meters high. Then I file a Status Report, which for this purpose is useless in the game, but has a chance of telling the Allies where I am, which is realistic. Me, anal? No way! On the other hand if you slip off to another grid for the sake of your boat and your crew, who's gonna know (besides the Gestapo spy I mean)? Quote:

Well, you know what they say.
You don't? Good thing I'm here to tell ya. Old enlisted men's saying: If they give you a crappy job and you do it well, your reward will be more crappy jobs.

When it comes to patroling, my rules are a bit more lax than Sailor Steve's.
I partrol the hell out of my assigned grid for a week. Once that week is up I get to choose an adjacent grid, then patrol that for a week. Once that week is up I choose another adjacent grid, and so on. Gives me a certain freedom of movement without me just freelancing wherever the hell I like. I used to have personal rules about not using the periscope when I was traveling too fast, not reloading externals in rough weather, not reloading internals whilst on the surface in rough weather etc . . . But no need now, h.sie and stiebler's fixes take care of that for me.
