I'd also be cool with a VATS system in TES V. A lot of NPC enemies wear mismatched armor, so it would make for sense to take a swing (or aim for us marksmen) at the fur greaves on the maurader's legs rather than the iron cuirass on his chest. Also, I'd like to see the idea of crippled limbs imported as well. I've lost count of the number of times that I have crippled a deathclaw's legs to slow him down; a tactic that would be very useful to me against some of the more powerful Elder Scrolls enemies.

I liked the sneaky throat-slit move, always loved that feature in the combat moves mod for Oblivion. Finally a move to finish off an enemy if you are stealthy enough. Always tend to play thief/murderer in Oblivion.

Which brings me to another thing: Shops/houses/hotels better restock after you've nicked everything. In stock Oblivion, being a thief was only good for so long as there was something to steal, the stuff never got restocked, fortunately mods fixed this.

I'm really looking forward to this next installment of TES. Been playing the series since Daggerfall, and have loved every minute of it. Granted, Oblivion did need the help of some mods to flesh out/improve it. Sounds familiar though, trying to think of a couple of Sub-Sims that had some issues fixed with mods......

Me too! It meshes well with the fact that I almost always play an evil character in sandbox RPGs like TES and Fallout. Not one that runs around killing indiscriminately, mind you. That's plain foolish. I'm more of the calculating villian.

Todd Howard, lead blokey on The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, has fessed up that last game Oblivion ditched a bit of the wonderful oddness of its marvellous predecessor Morrowind – and that this is something Bethesda hopes to correct in Skyrim.

Well, there’s an awful lot more than 20 reasons to be helplessly nerding out about the next Elder Scrolls game, but a nice round number is a good place to start, right? Let me be clear: I love Morrowind, quite like Oblivion and really didn’t get on with Fallout 3. I am what you might call a doubter. Nonetheless, I am impossibly excited about Skyrim, having recently been shown an hour of it (and listened to a bonus hour of lead dev Todd Howard answering questions about it). The re-thought Elder Scrolls levelling, skill, attribute and perk system in Skyrim is already proving divisive (as witnessed in comments on the last post), but I fear at least part of the reason for that is it’s not been explained terribly well as yet. And, to be honest, that’s partially because there’s only so much of it I can explain until I’ve had proper hands-on time and experienced it rather than been told ‘it’s better this way’. I like the sound of it, because I always thought Oblivion’s system was fussier and more opaque than it needed be (in terms of what it actually achieved), but I certainly don’t want a reduction in depth any more than the next Morrowind nut. For now though, here’s all the quotes on the subject I’ve got from Bethesda’s Todd Howard, which hopefully clear things up a little more – plus offer some extra detail on how the stealth and persuasion mechanics work.

A bit more Skrim news...sounds promising:

• Players can earn money by chopping up lumber, and can craft their own weapons
• The tallest mountain in the game can be climbed, but the snowfall gets increasingly heavy as you ascend
• The game will feature 150 dungeons, every one of which are different
• If you're particularly interested in the back story of the Elderscrolls series, you can hunt down all 300 books in the game
• The game will have 18 skill sets, however the Acrobatic and Athletic skills might have been removed for Skyrim
• The skills are each indicated by a constellation of stars, and as they level up can unlock perks, of which there are 280 in the game
• On the console version of the game, the shoulder buttons will each apply to a hand of the character
• The melee combat is apparently very realistic, with the height of the shield being an issue as to protecting your character and judging the distance to your opponent
• There are specific spells that can force characters/monsters/etc to run away or fight for you.
