She needs a lot of TLC unfortunately. Lots of rust, dust and flaking paint. But touring around her was very different than the plexiglassed passage ways and decks of the Battleship cove exhibits. Most of it looked it hadn't been touched since she was decommissioned.

Plexiglass - the bane of naval enthusiasts worldwide.
Great pics. I've always loved the big warships.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Of all the ships we visited the Salem admittedly was my personal favourite. She seems to be in original condition with some rust or should i better say patina. It was a pleasure to have a look at this beautiful ship ... and we were almost alone - the opposite of Intrepid and Growler at NYC which were pretty much crowded. |

Y'know Old Ironsides looked grand, the BB was imposing and the DD's looked utilitarian but of all the surface ships we saw that weekend, the Salem, to me exhibited the perfect combination of naval power and speed.

That photo of the dentists chair/area reminded me of the same aboard the USS texas.....I wonder if it was standard build/design?

For larger American ships, yes.
