Post Iran Companies Said to Be Paying Taliban to Kill U.S. Troops

At least five Iranian companies in Kabul are using their offices to covertly finance militants, according to a published report, and a Taliban treasurer says the front companies pay $1,000 for killing an American soldier and $6,000 for destroying a U.S. military vehicle.

Since when has Iran supported the Taliban? They don't like each other.

But I bet it would be in the best interest of the Taliban if they made people think Iran was involved.

And it would be in the best interest of the United States if people thought Iran was involved with the Taliban.

So the question we should be asking is: Who benefits from this "news"?

No the Iranians don't support the Taliban per se, but the Taliban are hardly a unified force. The Taliban and other tribal militia type groups in Afghanistan are very mercenary like and are willing to fight for those who will pay.

I could see Iran (who nearly invaded Afghanistan in 1998, after the Taliban killed a bunch of their diplomats and 8 thousand civvies in Mazar-i Sharif) paying Taliban to fight and die just to get rid of them rather than have them lay low until we leave. It seems like they are working against us but they may just be flushing these guys out- remember we worked secretly with Iran to take down the Taliban after 9/11.

Also I could see the Taliban making it up so we will fight Iran.

Pakistan and Iran rival in Afghanistan for influence. Iran ndoes not like the Taliban, therefore. However, two points. First, In Afghanoistan alliances chnage as quiockly as they have been built, and second, Western mind considers the enemy in Afghanistan to be Taliban, and thzus means all enemies when saying "Taliban". But the Taliban are just one amongst several factions, they are part of the "enemy" - but the enem is not exlcusively Taliban.

I take it as granted that Iran heavily supports factions in Afghanistan that are hostile to the US. If these supported factions are Taliban, is something entirely different. But it cannot be ruled out - they may act by an idea of "the enemy of my enemy is my friend". I would be surprised if Iran supports the Taliban with weapons and money - but only a little bit.
