To be honest I don't know.
I've never used the multiplayer option. Perhaps one of the other members can answer this question. [EDIT] You can not find a server with ping. You can only check IP communication with the ping utility. You need to have the right IP address before starting to ping.

I know when you ping lets say yahoo.com it also give the address that its pinging so thought it would do the same for the ubisoft servers.

Not necessarily.
That only works when an IP was registered at a DNS server and name resolution is working fine and some other things are up to date. But that's leading to a more complicated road. Before the name resolution is working (ping to a host name like yahoo.com), you first need to have the basics working. The basics are ping to an IP address, not ping to a "name". The latter needs good working basics before it will work. I hope this is making sense to you. The Enigma.

There is no need to wait with the ping test until you have the game server IP address.
You can do step 1 to 4, just skip the last step (ping to game server IP address) All the 4 previous steps need to be OK, before step 5 can be done.

All seems to be OK
Now we need the IP of the game server. Is this the first time you try to use multiplay? [EDIT] I'm wondering if there is still an on-line game server for SHIII running at UBI. Perhaps you better drop an email at UBI support. Here are some URL's for UBI servers: https://secure.ubi.com/Login/ http://gsconnect.ubisoft.com/ http://ubisoft-en.custhelp.com From UBISOFT Support Question: What Internet ports are required to be open in order to play Silent Hunter II online? Answer: The ports used by the game are in the range from: Silent Hunter III: 17997 to 18003 For online game, this could be customized from Main.cfg file in [Ubi.Com] section in the GamePort key; currently it is set to 18000. Note that this is an expert feature and we do not recommend changing it, unless there is no other way to use the default ports. Also, this setting will affect the game server you are creating, thus all the players joining to your game will have to be able to use these ports. But even if change the ports, you might still not be able join to other game servers created by other players using the default settings (18000) as long as these ports are not open for your use.

In that case you don't need the IP of the UBI Game server.
You are trying to setup your own game server, aren't you. First steps to do is follow the instructions from the manual, next make it work at LAN level, followed by making it work at internet level. You must be willing and capable to change the firewall settings of your ADSL router/Cable modem.

I tried changing the settings and even disabled the firewall to see if it would work and it didnt. I just cant figure out why it would work if i joined a game but not if i looged in to ubisoft and clicked create game i dont generate a ping.I am willing to change my router settings and i did set up the ports to allow for sh3 but still to no avail
Manual only give around 5 lines on multiplayer ,none of it on how to set it up though lol |

Disabling the firewall of the ADSL router insn't enough (and also not recommended).
You need to open the appropriate ports for inbound connections. Also, you need to define NAT rules so that an inbound connection is transferred through the router and send to the correct PC (game server) at the LAN side. Did you do those steps?
