Default Earthquake season?

I've just read a report of a +/- 7.2 'quake in Baja California, only one dead as it stands but a hundred or so injured. Shocks were felt as far away as LA and Phoenix.

A lot of high magnitude 'quakes this year. Wonder if this sort of thing happens relatively often or whether it's just because detection and reporting has gotten better.

EDIT: Death toll is two now. Still low considering the magnitude.

Thats probably because the quake actually originated in Mexico and news is a little slow to come out of there.

Quake was 100 miles away from me, I was outside when it came through and "lifted" my house.

Coming form the land where 7 of the world deadliest snakes cane be found in my back yard, let me tell you, 7.2 required a change of underwear.

Blatant plug: refer my blog and Courier Mail, Brisbane.

Another "proof" of global warming. I was just wondering if rising sea levels could add further strain on plates, but I don't think it would be significant.
