as a first person experiance, it will be possible, say,captain(you)on the conning tower, get killed but sub survive.
what then, sub ok, captain dead.
by the way, history buffs, did this ever happen during ww2

yes it happened.

I remember i read about one case that every officer got killed in an air assault so the medic had to get the boat back to port.

Howeever i doubt this will happen ingame.My guess is that the boat just wont go diving before the captain goes inside.

This was Kptlt Mutzelburg on 11 September 1942 during a bath session. He died a day after and was buried at sea.

At 14.20 hours, the boat had shot down a Sunderland aircraft but was shortly thereafter spotted by the Sunderland DW111 (423 Sqdn RCAF/S, pilot F/L R.H. Nesbitt) which had heard a SOS message and apparently observed the crash of the other plane from a distance of about 12 miles. U-921 avoided the five depth charges dropped but strafing wounded three crewmen, including the commander, Oblt. Wolfgang Leu. As the boat crash dived Leu got both his wounded men down the hatch but did not manage to get down into the tower himself. He slammed the hatch down as the boat dove and was drowned. On 26 May, the boat reached Trondheim, Norway under the command of the IWO.

U-637, 26 Apr 1945
Norwegian MTB's (motor torpedo boats) 711 and 723 claim sunk a German U-boat near Utsira, Norway. This attack was in fact aganst the U-637 which survived. The commander of the U-boat shot him self fatally after being seriously wounded in the face. The Engineering officer brought the boat to shore. Several men were lost in this action.
