Default Malfunctions?

Have we any indication yet on whether malfunctions and/or sabotage will be an included option?

The one thing I never liked about the compromised approach within SH3Cmdr was that whilst I could simulate a malfunction, SH3 wouldn't (for obvious reasons) see it as a malfunction and thus wouldn't attempt to repair it while at sea, meaning the player was stuck with malfunctions that in real life an industrious chief would have overcome (I work with an ex RAN CPO and some of the stories he's told me about at-sea repairs are amazing examples of ingenuity).

Even the much-despised SH2 had ocassional engine breakdowns, and warnings from the LI about running too long at flank speed.

I agree that realistic breakdowns would be a welcome addition, especially if they were accompanied by truly realistic repair times.

And the ability to watch the crew make the repairs. Woohoo.

Sounds great to me - always loved the malfuntions/sabatoge that were part of SHCommander!
So does that mean SH5 is shipping with a roll of duct tape, some super-glue, bailing wire and gum?

btw - JScones... are the sabatoge/malfunctions working with GWX3 yet? Just wondering cause thats the only reason I'm still playing GWX2.1... Love the uncertainty of something being broke!

The GWX team released updated cfg files for SH3Cmdr back in February... http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=147567

Imho, malfunctions are a basic requirement. They added a lot of realism to SH2

Yes. While playing sh-3 sh-4 and sh-4 Operation monsun with and without sh3 commander i always made test-dives to immerse myself. But after a while it becomes boring because i couldnt help asking myself why make testdives and such while there isnt a reason to do so? I really hope random malfunctions will make it in the sim because i mean comeon! It would make things much more exiting and realistic..

How about gas contaminiation from Damaged batteries - that could force you to surface?

I keep it on the front porch and use it to put my workboots on top LOL . My brother worked for an engineering firm and the boss had a complete uboat engine that he wanted to donate to a museum . No idea where he got it . No one wanted it so he said he would scrap it for the metal and the workers could take any parts they wanted . My brother gave me a piston and a few engine dials .

If I ever get my mod working, it could do this by writing to the saved game files at least for the crew injuries, illnesses and deaths; I suspect that it could do this for malfunctions also, but I haven't looked into this

Agreed. I think AOD had the warning "Sir, we have chlorine gas leaking! We must surface!"
