The only problem would be the sub's interior. Where would you get all the rooms from? I don't think people would like to 'ride' an uboat under the American flag.
So the solution would be an official add-on.

And preferably one though that allows both Allied and Axis campaigns to be run side by side with the same installation, rather then the SH4 approach.

My gut tells me there will not be an add-on for the Pacific. There is so much that needs to be replaced or added new. But even more important is a marketing reason. UBISoft will surely want to offer the Pacific theater as a stand alone sub sim instead of a lower priced add-on. My bet is that SH5 will be cloned and modified to create SH6 and will be released about 18 months or less after SH5. This assumes the new interface goes over well.

I can live with that. I just hope they don't make more improvements in between - not because I don't like improvements, but because it will open up more complaints about one side or the other not being served properly. I'd love to see identically good games for both phases of the war, followed by British, Dutch, Russian and Japanese submarines, plus a good Escort Sim.
Hey, I can dream, can't I?

Don't count on it. Even the UBM addon required me to make some changes to S3D (two controllers iirc, related to hydro propulsion). We're talking about a new game here, with dozens of improvements and new features, and perhaps a new way of storing data, so S3D is bound to be useless. Let's hope for some good out-of-the-box tools

No. But they have indicated some time ago they built a new engine, and by the looks of the new features this is true. We must wait for more details from ubisoft about what the future of modding looks like.
