I'm going to be fitting a new twin fan cooler to my Nvidia 8800GTX Gfx card to aid the cooling situation
Problem is there is a heatsink on the motherboard that might get in the way,now I'm assuming that the heatsink is for the onboard Gfx chip,So I was wondering since I won't be using the onboard Gfx,is it safe to remove the Heatsink ![]() Or am I going to have to find and purchase a low profile heatsink Any help from members, suggestions or ideas greatly appreciated

Its more likely that it's the chipset heatsink, It would be unwise to remove that. If you can find some drawings of the motherboard online it may help. I usually build my own computers so I refer to the motherboard handbook for such info. I'd certainly want to be 100% certain before I removed anything if I were you.

Im sorry, I wasn't aware of the tech forums
![]() And FordPrefect,The MB is an ASRock K10N78, I think you might be right,in which case I've got to find a low profile HS that fits, why anyone would stick a large Heatsink so close to a PC-IE slot is beyond me Any advice? Its one of these http://www.asrock.com/mb/overview.asp?Model=K10N78

If you got the balls. Carefully remove and VERY CAREFULLY grind the heatsink to get clearance.
Good Luck.

Or replace the heatsink with a lower profile chipset fan.

That introduces the nasty possibility of fan failiure leading to the chipset temp rocketing, which isn't good at all. I had it happen to my first pc, since then I've stuck with heat sinks instead. Once my stuff arrives back from Norway soon I'll be able to rebuild my old PC, thats got no cooling issues ever since it was rigged up to a vapo chill unit. the CPU usually ran about -50C

Thats what I would love,watercooling
I think I've found a heatsink that will fit and is only 12mm high, problem is it has no mounting lugs,so would have to attach it using 3M thermal tape Just how good is that stuff? I've never used it before so I'm not to sure

I've tried watercooling and it's not all it's cracked up to be to be honest, and there's always the nasty risk of a water leak frying everything. Vapochill is far far better by comparison.
