Default Fatal Nascar crash in Mexico

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RFZGcEVQYm0

I know its easy to point out stuff after something happens, but wtf where the track designers thinking here? RIP, mr Pardo.

PS: Likely disturbing to watch.

Well, he got tagged in the left rear quarter panel that caused the spin and the concrete wall was not placed very well at all. In fact the placement sucked. If I were the driver that tagged him I would not be feeling to good about myself.

It looks as if he hit the water barrier, which is what it is designed for. Its certainly a tragedy and I cannot understand what the voice-over is saying, but from the tarp used to place him in the helicopter, for better or worse he died on impact.

Water barrier+180 mph= useless. Dead on impact, certaily. There was less then a milli-second of impact absorption by the water barrier. He took the full brunt of it.

Isnt this a 'modern' track?

There was a quote after daytona "Were going to race like this untill someone dies" sadly prophetic.

After watching the video I can see the problem. Dead end walls on tracksides is a bad bad idea. It should be at least angled.

That was a forseeable, preventable accident. NASCAR should never have sanctioned an event on that track.

What I dont get is this was a new track I thought. At least only a few years old.

No one during the time of design, construction, testing pointed out "Hey that wall sticking out there aint that kind of dangerous?"

the edge of the wall acted like a knife.

Most tragic.

I don't follow NASCAR, but I do watch enough races to agree that was one of the worst designed tracks I have ever seen. What in the heck were they doing with concrete barriers that close to the track?!?!

That should have been a 'relatively' harmless spin on a grass infield not a fatal accident.

Horrible.

Yeah, that's some poor track safety. That shouldn't have been anything more than a yellow flag.

Here's hoping Pardo didn't even have time to realize what was happening.

From what I understand, there were only three laps to go.

On a side note, there was something else I noted while watching the video: the stands were practically empty. I can't explain why, but that no one seemed to give a damn about the race makes this a little bit worse.

He was killed instantly, I assume.

That's a damn shame.
