GWX 2.1 and a couple of basic eye candy add’ons and some standard 2.1 options Career / Patrol 7 / Boat – VIIC - U-52 June 1941 / Grid CG (About 400 clicks SW off the Portuguese coast) – Wind 4 knots, visibility good. The way it all started was I spotted this small British convoy, I got spotted by the leading AB Class, who legged it towards me at 30+ knots, I dove and ran silent, took an angle of 90 on him and lashed an eel in to his bow tip from 300m. The AB immediately about turned and left at fast speed back to the other three ships, without so much as a depth charge dropped. I waited for him to get back to the lead of the convoy, some 15km away and started my stalk from their rear, also on a NNE bearing. As an experiment, I saved the game and attacked the back medium merc from about 12000m with the deck gun, in perfect conditions. The order of ships in this little convoy of 4 ships, was; 1 med merc (one at rear), a Granville Type freighter (2nd), 1 med merc (3rd) and the AB class destroyer in lead position, traveling NNE @ 9 knots towards Northern Spain and Biscay. My attack continued on the rear craft until at about 8000m I came under fire from all four ships. I remained on the surface at full tilt changing course from time to time to keep the AB blocked by the three merchants. At 4000m and about 100 deck rounds later I heard the “she is going down”, the rear medium merchant has succumb to my deck gun onslaught. At speed I passed her by as she was sinking. I set 1 of my last bow tube eels to magnetic and slotted the Granville Type freighter, who also then took a dive. With another rake of deck gun rounds and one trop I sank the next damaged medium merchant. At this stage I was down to 25% Hull integrity, three dead gun crew (buried at sea), one steam bow eel and one stern gas eel left. The time was about 1800 and now getting dark, the AB continued on a constant NNE bearing and although slightly listing forward maintained a steady 9 knots and was not engaging me at all, I was right behind her at about 2000m. With all deck gun ammo gone and one bow torp left I decided to speed up behind her as close as possible and slot her in the posterior with a mag eel. The eel actually hit her propellers straight on, bounced back and momentarily stopped, did the same thing again and then veered off to her port side with no effect. All this time I was still not under fire from her guns? As it was getting late (in real life!!) and I had saved the game earlier for experimental reasons, I decided to hell with it, set straight ahead for her stern at full speed to ram her, I thought this may wake her up a little! I impacted her stern, veered off her starboard side, passed her by at 16 knots (she was still doing 9) and ended up in front of her at about 400m, still no shots being fired at me? I took up a stern 90 degree firing angle and slammed her with my last torp from my rear tube, set for 1.5m impact. She’s going down! Three merchants and one AB class down to Davy Jones’s Locker! My question is: I got no recognition for the medium merc I sank with the deck gun in either the captain’s log or when i docked at Lorient? It simply was not listed or considered for renown tonnage? Is this normal when you sink a craft with your deck gun? Additionally, why once I had sunk the 3 mercs and the night was rolling in did the AB class ignore me and continue off at 9 knots and make no attempt to engage me, despite my concerted attempts to get her to react and also my close proximity? (Jesus, I was ramming her stern and rubbing hulls with her and nothing!):hmm: And then to let me take a sitting duck shot at her and sink her, this really had me baffled. It was like the Marie Celeste, just chugging on her merry way with out a bother? Until…….. Any ideas anyone? PS: Sorry for the long winded explanation, quiet at work today!!!!!

Thanks for the replys lads, please see my comments below - Cheers:
@ onelifecrisis: Lifeboat mod & a U-boat skin - all other mods are the standard with GWX 2.1. My initial attack commenced in day light and once the three merchants were dispatched it was starting to get dark, so by the time i was dealing with the AB Class, it would have been quite dark but bear in mind, this whole scenario was played out on the surface. @ nikbear: No, i saved the game in the normal in patrol fashion, Escape, Save Game, (saved under a new name) and then Continue Game. I didnt come out of game as such and reload it. @ bookworm_020: No, all four ships were most certainly British, no nutrals amongst them, this i always make sure of.
