My how times have changed...

If he tried that today he probably would have been slapped with a sexual harrasment case.

Todays headline "US soldier loses control after returning home from a senseless war"

Yes, it would be sexual assault by today's standards.

Is it a true shot? There is another famous one, which meanwhile has been found to have been staged. Or is it maybe even this one?

I believe that one is legit. Read the story linked to the anchor post. Even has the woman being kissed in it.

Your thinking of Iwo Jimi and the Surybachi flag raising. I believe it was found to be staged as they wanted a larger flag on the makeshift pole.

But even tho that second flag raising was "staged", the men were not posed, they simply set up the flag and Rosenthal got the picture.

Its true the 'famous' version of that photo of the raising of the flag was staged, however Skybird is correct there is also a 'staged' version of this (kiss) shot as well.

No-no, it was a kissing scene.

Alfred Eisenstaedt’s image of a sailor kissing a girl in a white dress in Times Square on VJ day was real. Robert Doisneau’s photograph of a couple kissing by the Hotel de Ville in Paris in 1950 was not.

That first photo is most certainly not staged. Here is the same event, but in a different angle:

And talking about now and then...well....that war had lasted for a long time, and the chances of getting killed in that war as an american soldier must have been much much higher than being killed today. So I sure'd be happy to know it's over.

Besides, the outcome after WWII was undoubtedly a victory, but if your boys come home today...would they be victorious?

If memory of reading serves me correct,

The photo was originally taken on VP Day (Nov 11) following the unconditional surrender. At the time, crowds swarmed New York City and in an impromptu moment, a sailor grabbed a Nurse of the US Navy and kissed her. Photo was snapped.
Now, as I understand, neither of the kissers knew each other at that time, it was a "passing moment". They went their separate ways.
Sometime ago(?) the press went in search of the couple. They found the woman, but were unable to identify the sailor until maybe recently. Subsequently, an sculptor was commissioned and this statute was built and now stands in the shadow of the USS Midway, San Diego.

Unconditional Surrender Statute

The statute has been mooted to be be disassembled and moved to Times Square where both the kisses have agreed to be at the unveiling.

By coincidence, I was at the statute on Saturday morning for a dawn service. (No photos by request.)
