U-401 along with KptLt. Menhert, Ernst, Ebby and the rest of the boat's highly successful crew was sunk in grid square AM54 in deep water with all hands lost.

On 18 April 1944, In persuit of a convoy, U-401 was detected and went deep to evade attack. After being relentlessly hedgehogged and depth charged for a 40 minute period, U-401 finally secumbed to her wounds. The wreck, mostly intact, lies on a shallow slope, approximately 4,300 feet (1300 meters) below the surface.

Caps off in salute to the valiant crew of U-401 who gave their lives for the Vaterland.

"Vatherland" reminds me of Lord Vader

Anyways... U-47's crew will always remember U-401 and its men... a terrible loss
