Not bad for 1953 but nowhere as realistic in my view as Das Boot. Definiately worth a watch though. Somre great performances and a cracking good story too.

I have seen it and I have it on DVD which is part of a 4 disc box set including Ice Cold in Alex, The Dambusters and The Colditz Story. It's a excellent film which focuses on the crews of a Corvette during those difficult years for the Royal Navy. An excellent film which should be part of any U Boat enthusiasts collection.

I have an original copy of the book from the 50's, hardback etc. A great read.
Apparently when they were making it they approached the Irish Naval Service and asked could they use one of their corvettes for the filming, but that would have depleted the Naval Service big time so their request was turned down as they had so few ships. So in the end they got a corvette from the Indian Navy for the shooting. |

I've read the book --clips from the movie appear on the GWX main menu. Notice Jack Hawkins picking up telephone on the bridge.

I read the book not too long ago. I've also read Monsarat At Sea, which is a collection of his short stories, including the true 'reports' he wrote during the war, which were later worked into the book.

The Cruel Sea is a great film I used it to teach my wife about
what her Grandfather did as a captain. another favorite of mine from the genre and a really excellent film is Corvette K-225 on par with the cruel sea IMO and its a great film for Canadian naval buffs as its an RCN film made during the war with randolph scott. in about three of the scenes hmcs buctouche (K-179) is substituted for K225 while the starring ship was called away to other duty during filming. although the Wifes Grandfather had moved onto a River class at that time Buctouche was his ship through 41-42 I give both films |
