Decided to look up the History of my current Sub USS Grunion. And I was a little depressed to say the least. She was lost on her first patrol, another one of those Mistery disapearances.
Its a Gato Class And Im now on my 5th patrol. So far I have sunk about 150,000 Tons of shipping. Story of the Grunion http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Grunion_(SS-216) |

Tragic, its sad to see how a crew gave their lives to a fate that we don't even know.
But her name lives on... and thanks to SH4, in more ways than a history book could ever convey.

Truly a sad loss. My ship too was lost in early 1943. Playing this game makes me appreciate the sacrafice these brave men made.

There was just an article in my hometown paper about the Grunion last week or so. The skipper's kids are trying to locate her. There will be an expedition this summer to try and prove it is the Grunion. Here is a website about the search.

Its amazing how attached you can get to your own boat in SH4, if it lasted to the end of the war you think about keeping it that way when you play. If it was lost during the war you are pre-occupied with somehow doing the real boat the dignity of surviving through this time. Funny world, but I think it helps one appreciate the work and efforts, even if its only a fraction.

I tried to stay away until the bugs were fixed myself, that and I bought SHIII a bare week before SHIV came out so it was fun and new to me as well. But...
...here I am on my first career mode mission in SHIV. Couldn't stay away. And I did the same thing you guys did. Had to look up the Sailfish and see what its story was. Turns out to be rather colorful even before the war: http://www.onr.navy.mil/focus/blowba...us/default.htm Sims may not be historically pure or as colorful as real life written histories but they do teach us about how the men may have thought and acted in some limited but functional way just reading about the events doesn't wholly capture either. The fact they do inspire us to read more about what actually happened does help keep the memories of these events and people very much alive. |

USS GRUNION has been located off of the Aleutian Islands in Alaska. She was located around the same time that Russian divers filmed the wreckage of USS WAHOO SS-238 in La Perouse Straits where she was sunk on 11 October 1943. What sank her was an aerial bomb that hit her on the cigarette deck of her superstructure and blew out portions of her starboard hull near the crews mess aft of the control room. It is believed that members of the crew survived the initial explosion and tried to lighten the ship in a vain attempt to surface and escape. The crew was unable to do so and they and the ship remain in approx 210 feet of water.

God...
Makes you wonder what it is like. Depth Charges or Bombs breaking your hull. Water rushing in. Your friends and ship mates lay around injured. Your boat plummiting twords oblivion. You know what is going to happen in a few minutes, and you wonder what dying would be like. What runs through your mind in those last moments as water fills up your compartment? What would have been the last thing they wanted to do? Makes me really appreciate their sacrafice...

The Japanese sub was the I 25 and it sank the Russian sub L 16 on 10/13/1942. The Grunion was lost on 07/30/1942. Found in the book "Geschichte des U-Boot-Krieges 1939-1945" by Leonce Peillard. |
