Default Positioning Of US Flag On WW 2 Subs

I've been wondering about this lately (I guess I have nothing else to do) about where on a US submarine was the US flag flown. In SH4 the flag is at the stern of the submarines. I've spent some time looking at pictures of the uS subs in WW II and the flag is always flown of the rear end of the conning tower or behind the periscope shears. Does anybody know where it was flown? I remember in the movie Run Silent, Run Deep the flag was positioned at the rear of the conning tower (sorry don't know the technical name). Below are some examples of what I've found.

USS Seawolf

USS Tambor

USS Wahoo

In port it should be flown from the stern of the ship, at sea however, it would be flown as shown in your pictures.

Default US World War 2 Subamarines

here is the USS Bowfin Subamrine. She was Laid down 23 July 1942
Launched 7 December 1942, she was commissioned May 1st 1943 then was decommissioned in 1947 February 12th then came back in service in the 1950s and 60s then went outta service in 1971 December 1st, and was then turned into a museum at pear harbor in Hawaii. Here's a picture of it with a flag at the front of the ship and one in the back section, if you look closely.

That's the correct flag arrangement for inport. The Navy Jack flying at the bow, and the American Flag flying aft.
