Default Transfer to Mare Island

Running TMOwtw, March 9 1943 In Midway after ending patrol. I checked for available transfers and saw Mare Island.
The TMO manual discusses a transfer choice of "new Construction at Mare Island", which gives you a new Gato boat.
I decided to go see, but after transferring I checked the ship status, still have a Balao, and everything is exactly as it was, just like a transfer to Asiatic fleet would be.

Are there advantages to starting from Mare Island? I see one disadvantage: being 3000 miles farther from action.

The only 'advantage', if you already have a Gato or Balao, is getting to see the Golden Gate Bridge. The disadvantages are many - especially having to go through the 'shake-down' missions, and then getting transferred back to Pearl...

Thanks Propbeanie, I kind of figured that it wouldn't be the best.
Although as Navy bases go, Mare Island was kind of nice. I spent 6 months there in Nuke School.
My roommate left very early, and I had the room (yes room) to myself. That was back in '66. I remember we took the 'cattle cars' to the mess hall. Semi trailers: Stand up and hold on tight.

Yeah, no combst missions from there. One does have to be aware of the potential for an IJN sub to trespass, if in FotRSU - you will usually get an East China Sea assignment as your 'shake-down' graduation gift!

Those 'cattle cars' have to be better than hoofing it to mess though - unless someone like me was operating the tractor!...

Just for fun, I took the transfer (after I saved, of course) Just to see the Golden Gate.

What I got for orders was 7000 miles away, off Korea.
I looked at the bridge and bailed.
Back at Midway, started patrol and got the exact same Mission.

OH well.. stay away from 'Frisco'.

Interesting... I'll have to do me some more testing on the FotRSU transfers (base on TMO v1.7), because from what I remember, if you requested a transfer and got it, you then went on a patrol from your home port (Midway in your example), and after you were out, ~then~ your Home Port changed (Mare Island here)... Thanks for posting back about this and what happened with you!
