Extreme long range visual help

Folks, I really wish my memory was better .... around 2 - 3 years ago, for the sruface warfare mod, I found a post on here somewhere which discussed how to make objects visible on / above the horizon at extreme distances. This interested me from the POV I am trying to make it possible to have long range engagements with BB's etc. and to be able to see the ship as the shells land.... now I managed to do this, and remember the only drawback was ships seemed to be "floating" above the horizon at ranges, say, of 20Km and greater ..... not only can I not remember how I did it, I can't find in my mod files a file which makes it happen - probably because I've comlpetely forgotten what I'm looknig for. I'm trying to make it happen via chanegs to cameras.dat, but I've got a strange feeling it's a value in another file which affets this - something to do with scale or something.

Can anyone remember seeing this post or know how to make this long range visual change ?
