Default Surface Night Attacks

I have read many books on u-boats, including the u-boot commanders handbook. I learned that in the early years of the war many of the top u-boat aces were very successful at attacking convoys on the surface during the night. I found this very hard if not impossible to do in sh4, my question, has anyone been able to do this successfully in the game? I will try to give a brief scenario of how I try to accomplish a surface night attack:
Sept. 1940. position is the western approach off the north west coast of Ireland. Time is 0200 in the morning, very dark no moon, sea is relatively calm. Convoy is sighted and heading in the direction of u-boot. Silence on deck, engines are not running, corvette escort is leading the convoy at 6kts. AOB is about 45 port, distance around 3,000 km. I keep the u-boat at 000 relative bearing towards the corvette, to keep a low siloute, only raise the diesels to 1/3 speed to turn towards escort, then immediately shut them down. First column of ships is getting close now, about 50 degrees relative bearing to u-boat, aob is small around 10 degrees port, they are heading right for us. Then when corvette is at aob 80 degrees port, 2700km she turns hard to port, aob 001, moving very fast, white foam mustache at her bow, they spotted us!! we start to take fire from enemy and crash dive.

Back before the convoy was near I saved game, and tryed re-playing this scenario over and over but with no luck.
I only use OMv 600 with patch, and some sound mods.
Is it possible ???
Thanks

I will agree it seems very early for this kinda action. I have noticed they will home in on me at 6000 meters. How the German commanders did the attack is beyond me. I have a feeling the night penalty on the AI is not high enough.

Heil!

I've done surface attacks several times! It's easy. Middle of the night and at a good distance. Allthough I find it hard to set the torpedo calculations because of the waves and submarine behavior in rough sea, I have killed alot of Englishmen on the surface.

Peace and love
