contact depth

How to determining contact depth using passive sonar in SCX? So far do it by using HF sonar.

Usually it is enough to know if it is above or below a soundlayer. Once the torpedo get's close enough the seeker has a wide enough sensor cone to detect anything from 0 to crushdepth. If the target is there, it will find it anyway. At launch the torpedo follows the launch depth of the submarine, or either the floor or ceiling depth if it is outside of it. Setting the torpedo search depth works to make it "pop-up" to search the other side of the layer when it enables.

tracking contact

actually my intention to know contact depth is to tracked it from it's baffle area and if possible obtain visual contact using periscope Although I once try to use the periscope at 200 ft depth and there's nothing to see just a dark and silent place.

For that you need the HF sonar. If you approach it far enough from a distance then it should become clearly visible in the display. Also it's vertical position relative to you. If it is in the upper area of the display it's above you, if below the middle then it's deeper. Simply adjust your depth by eye or else it might end up in your HF sonar baffles.

Greetings all,
one only needs to know contacts depth relative to own ship if there is a layer.
Without thermal layer, torpedo homing is straight forward. If there is a layer, just look at waterfall display on the broadband. The contact is bright when your both on the same side of the layer otherwise...
