Conf.ini let's you change the look of water, forests & effects.

Forest goes up to 3
Effects up to 2
And water up to 4, tho the 3 is the best looking one.

The most noticable is the water. Here, go to this URL and scroll down till you see the pics of the different waters:

What about clouds?

I have to turn them off but I thought there was a way of getting the older clouds that wouldn't hit my GPU so much.

Also I have been looking at my setting and the OpenGL ones are different to the DX ones.

I have OpenGL set in game as my preferred choice.

Now I have an X300 SE with 128 RAM and 512 MB on my mobo.

Not a bad GFX card for one that came with the system. Any ideas what I should set my open gl ones too?

The DirectX came late for the IL2, so use it only if you have to. The game was designed to be played on OpenGL mode.

About the clouds, there's three choices for them via the in-game menu; Off, simple & Detailed.

Not sure, but I've heard that you can change it from the conf.ini too, that is if you want more detailed clouds than what the in-game menu allows. But like I said, not sure about it.

Buy a real aircraft and fly for real. That's it. Remember, IL2 is ooooooold game.

Got $50 bucks? At most flight schools in America (not sure about other countries) you can take an introductory flight for $50 bucks. I think it is something AOPA puts on. I was allowed to taxi and take off and fly over to my house with the only assistance being rudder control and landing. It was my first time in a plane too. I was about 16 or so at the time and I got to take my parents along for the ride. Lots of fun!
