Default The Phalanx Close-In Weapons System fires 75 20mm rounds a second.

Warning to all Kamikaze pilots ... the USN is not going to take it anymore.

Can you image 75 rounds of 20mm a second

http://www.upi.com/Defense-News/2017...1011491408467/

April 5 (UPI) -- A new electric gun that allows varying rates of fire by the Phalanx Close-In Weapon System has been successfully tested by Raytheon.

The new electric gun design replaces the Phalanx's pneumatic motor, compressor and storage tanks, resulting in a 180 pound weight reduction.

The initial test firing was to validate that the new gun was operable despite the Phalanx's heavy vibrations.

"Phalanx is a weapon of last resort and the electric gun's larger magazine will allow the U.S. and its allies to stay in the fight longer,"

Rick McDonnell, director of Raytheon's Close-In Defense Solutions program, said in a press release.

Phalanx is a computer-controlled radar and 20mm gun system. It automatically acquires, tracks and destroys close-in enemy threats that have penetrated other ship defenses. It fires 75 rounds a second and has a maximum range of 2.2 miles.

Yes, the CIWS is capable, except when overwhelmed. How many CWIS batteries does a Fig, CLS, or DDG have on board? (one)

Budgets are not always good.

Here's the thing about the phalanx. They are the last ditch effort to try and keep you alive, but your going to hurt.

The Russians have a love of putting very large warheads on missiles that fly really fast. Even if the Phalanx isn't overwhelmed, the gun mount has an engage range of 2.2 miles. By the time it destroys that missile, assuming everything went according to plan, that missile has closed to within 1.5 miles and was detonated by the 20mm shells. A close aboard explosion of a 600 pound high explosive is going to cause damage and casualties. It won't sink you but you won't make it out scott free

That's Russia ... sometimes I think these weapons are more for the up and coming third world countries, but your right if it's a major power your going to hurt.

What if the gunner hits the target and the ship makes it back home safe and sound. I bet that gunner can have anything he or she wants.

The Ticonderoga Class CG has 2 CIWS onboard, the Burke Class DDG has 1. Individually they can be overwhelmed, but part of a battlegroup they form overlapping fields of fire. But the Phalanx isn't it's only form of anti-missile defence. There's also the surface to air missile compliment that can engage aircraft as well as other missiles.

Boarder Patrol should order a few to repurpose.
