Seeing that you just bought it I don't see how you can make that kind of statement. It will take you months to figure out what SH5 has to offer/brings to the table (and depending on what mods you install it could take you many months more).

The downloads section is not the most up-to-date place for SH5 mods. To find the most up-to-date mods look in the SH5 mods forum.
yeah real navigation IS indeed very good and makes playing the game a very different experience.

Journal? I can type down "cargo ship sunk at XX YY on -- / -- /--" "ship sighted at XYZ"... Fun for some I guess?

AI in Sh5 (even with IRAI 30.0) still isn't as realistic , dangerous and threatening and well done as it did in SH3. (Although IRAI made things a LOT better)

Automations. Yeah, a nice addition

Crew / crew management in Sh5 - even modded, still needs a MAHOOSIVE overhaul.

Playable subs - Sh3 wins on this - obviously.

Sh5 DOES have the potential to be a lot better than SH3 I agree.... but SH5 still has a long, long way to go.

Couldn't agree more about the reasons.

Personally, I can't for the life of me figure out how to compare SH3 to SH5. SH3 is (Modded) a great subsim, even for a "dinosaur" and I won't get into all the virtues of that game 'cause everyone knows. However, to compare SH3 to 5 is like comparing two different kinds of music and asking which ones better.
When I got some of the mods installed in SH5 (the Graphic mods for one) I was floored. I was very happy to be playing SH4 with those graphics and gameplay (modded).
SH5 is it's own game, the great work done by the modders so far has made this game quite breathtaking and fun. A good part of that fun (as with the other games) is tweaking it to your liking. Right now, where-ever I am, I can't wait to get home and boot it up. My grades at life are suffering for it but I don't care, my wife will just have to wait .
Good Hunting all

Default SH V from Steam

Just a question: if I purchase SH5 from Steam, could I mod it as if I purchased SH5 boxed edition?

Yes. With exception of TDW's sh5.exe patch, which doesn't work on the Steam version. Then again, when I bought the Steam version not TOO long ago it was about what, 20 bucks, and the boxed DVD version is 5 bucks on Amazon, so why buy the Steam version in the first place?

And don't get me wrong. I like Steam, I've got God knows how many games from them, it's just that this particular one I like better in the DVD version.

However I am in a similar position to you. I've just bought SHV because I thought it was time to try it, now that the constant online requirement has been removed.

However, modding SHV is hard. I visited the downloads area of Subsim to see what there is but it seems out of date. For example, The Dark Wraith's UI mod is from last year - and I know there are later vrsions than those because seen references to them in the forum. So now I'm wondering where I should find all these mods? For a newcomer to SHV it's difficult to know what and where all the latest mods are, and it's also difficult to know which mods to combine.

Which mods are you using?
As to how to find them (but you might want to try out pedrobas' MMM mod instead), try this thread. It has links to almost everything.

Thank you, Misha!
And what about torpedo damages? Is there a mod, in one of the three SH, that offers a better view of these?

Not sure what you mean there. If you want to inspect the damage up close, the external camera is your friend unless you've modded the underwater scenery to be realistically murky. If you just want to see how much damage you've done to the target, you can leave the "damage bars" on in the realism menu.

guess this is a good place for a lurker to post finally

I've played SH3 and 4 before i decided to try 5 about a year ago. I'll be honest, I didnt give it a chance. soon after loading it up i was scared away by the lack of dials and numbers that i was so familiar with from the other games in the series, as was the lack of missions extending to the end of the war and lack of other U-Boat types (ill omit my rage on Uplay lol). However, a few days ago i decided to load up SH5 and install a few mods and my opinion instantly changed. I now consider it my favorite of the series (for now) not only due to its gorgeous look but the immersion it adds to the series. Is it GWX? not at all. Do i miss the type IXC? yup. But SH5 still brings to the table like many have said an engine that has tons of potential to be one ofthe best once all the bugs and kinks are modded out

my two cents
