Default Operation Monsoon- How do I survive air attacks?

Running about as a Type IXD2, which seems to take about four minutes to reach periscope depth. I have thus found that fighting it out on the surface tends to give a better survival rate, considering the usual rate of approach of a bomber and the long, long dive time. Any tips on how to keep my big, slow boat alive?

your boats crew's skill is deciding upon diving times etc. so with a diving time of 4 minutes to P depth i guess your crew is sleeping and you are doing everything by your self?

try the following:
- give general quarters before diving (this puts all the crew in charge, and therefore speeds up the boats "skills")
- dont press "D" for dive, but "C" for Crashdive

cheers
morph

P.S. i was very delighted of the IX/D2 and i think to remember a diving time of 30 seconds ...

Would you happen to know which compartments most affect diving time? I've been swapping in more competent crew members, but I seem to be a bit short on officers and petty officers considering the number of areas.

I absolutely agree with Morpeus.

Going to periscope depth isn't going to save you.
Crash dive as fast as you can when enemy plane is detected.
Fighting them risks your boat.

The quality of the command room personnel is a major factor.

I was just using time to periscope depth as a measurement, I try to go for 70-90 meters of depth. As for quality, obviously someone has been passing out booze to command staff.

After some time playing, I have determined that the fault was with the very poor starting skills my crew had. After swapping out the antifreeze drinking idiots and slapping in those with 25+ skill, the boat began to dive somewhat more quickly.

Yes!!! Experience plus locking up the antifreeze works just about every time. The key is to survive long enough for the experience to help you.

Many rookie boats were sunk in the Bay of Biscay without having fired a single torpedo.

Well, that's what they get for drinking the antifreeze and huffing seagulls.

rule number 1. dont screw around with planes on O.M., they are vicious.sure they might miss you the first time, don't press your luck.

the solution, dont go through shallow areas, especially near enemy ports. try to plan your route to deeper waters only. if your crew does spot aircraft, all ahead flank, and crash dive to at least 40+ meters. ( i prefer more like 60 meters). when deep enough, all stop and make like a bubble in the water, and just time compress until night when it's much safer to be surfaced.

if you must go through shallow areas near land,do so only at night when the planes aren't out scouting as much.

the sneaky thing with planes too, i noticed, is they're vengeful. if you just killed a contact in an area, there's bound to be a patrol through there very soon. kill and g.t.f.o. of there. or do the above until night when it should be safer.

later on in the campaign, you receive dive command officers with passive abilities to help you dive faster, (i noticed mine appeared after i went up in rank) and reduce flooding, which will certainly help you out too. (they need to be in the control room for the ability to be active)

hope this helps.
