Icon7 Three Great Tabletop WW2 Sub Games

I know there are a lot of Silent Hunter 3 and 4 players here, but are any of you into playing old-school tabletop war games? Three great games by Consim I highly recommend are The Hunters, The Hunted, and Silent Victory. They cover Germany's U-boat war and America's Pacific sub war. Very detailed and fun solitaire war games where the player commands a single U-boat or sub for the duration of the war. They even feature specific equipment damage and crew injuries/deaths.

Are they like the old Avalon Hill games, such as Battle of the Bulge, where you have hexagons on the playing board, and units can move only so far, a roll of the dice determines each units' outcome in a battle?...

Yes, they use cardboard counters and dice like the older Avalon Hill games.

What's great about these three games is that they reproduce the experience of playing Silent Hunter 3 and 4, but in tabletop form.

Below are the links to The Hunters and Silent Victory download pages. Download the game manuals (Rules Booklets) and some of the other stuff. Should give you a good idea of game play.

Thanks for posting these. These games look interesting, especially for us who grew up on the Avalon Hill games.

Interesting game play.

I would probably write some simple code to handle the chart look up

Ahhhh... a mixed-media kind of gamer eh, Platapus?... - I guy I used to play Avalon Hill games with every month during out high school years, thought that my use of a calculator was cheating... Of course, I didn't think that. He could come up with scenarios in his head, and do the movement math and strength calculations in his head, on the fly. Me? I'd just get all glassy-eyed, and the word "TILT!" would come up on my forehead if I tried to do it in my head... I really remember Gettysburg and The Battle of the Bulge as being my two favorites, because I at least stood a chance against Mike in those games. You give him PanzerBlitz or Afika Korps on either side, and I'd lose inside of an hour... and actually, somewhat like a chess game with the guy, he'd tell me I'd lost within 15 minutes, but we'd keep playing, just to torture me...

Those are very cool-looking games Traveller. I might have to get me one and give them a whirl. My kids are always good at beating me at board games, so maybe I can interest one or both of them to play one of these. They haven't touched SH4 with me in ~months~...

Propbeanie, you won't be disappointed. All three of these games are very accessible and easy to jump into. The game play is quite streamlined and flows well.

Anyone interested in trying out The Hunters or Silent Victory on their windows PC for free can download a freeware program called Vassal. Below is a video showing The Hunters board game play on Vassal software.

Here are links to the downloads you will need to play both games. Of course the software version isn't as good as the actual tabletop game, but it will at least give you all an idea of how they play while we are waiting for the next edition of these three great games to go into production again later this year.

The Hunters (U-boat) game module (Download version 2.1):

The Hunters main download page. I strongly recommend downloading and printing out the Rules Booklet and Patrol Log Sheet files:

Silent Victory (Pacific) game module. Download latest version 1.02:

Silent Victory main download page. Again, I strongly recommend downloading and printing out the Rules Booklet and Patrol Log Sheet files:

Hey everyone. I wanted to post an update. According to the developer, all three should be ready for shipping by this spring-summer. Pre-ordering now will save you 30% off the regular price.

Exclamation

Update:

The Hunters, The Hunted, and Silent Victory will all start shipping at the same time- early 2019.

https://boardgamegeek.com/thread/194...s-next-reprint

P500 orders save 30%.

These three games are incredibly popular and sell out very quickly. It's years before reprints are released- if ever.

The Hunters, The Hunted, and Silent Victory are set to start shipping in a couple more months. Get the 30% discount pre-order price while you can.

There's also another great solitaire U-boat wargame that was released last year based on the same system as The Hunters and Silent Victory, but takes place in World War I. Very detailed and fun. It's called Raiders of the Deep. While it isn't cheap, the game has so much content that I feel it is more than worth the price. And replayability is very high. Includes 19 different U-boat models to command!

Yes! All 4 of the games in the series are awesome. They are all based on the same streamlined system and the rules are easy to learn. Gameplay is smooth and quick, and are all very replayable.

What I love most about these games is that they realistically simulate being in command of a US submarine or German U-boat, with enough details to satisfy. A computer isn't required to play them- just some table space and 15-30 minutes per mission. These tabletop wargames are actually better than computer games in my opinion. Easier on the eyes, too.

And regarding the price, The Hunters 30% off P500 pre-order price is only $31 right now. A bargain for what you get, considering all of the research and work that went into creating it. I paid $75 sale price for Raiders of the Deep, but it was still worth it.
