Default Surface Battles

When you get a message saying there is a battle somewhere and all units are requested to assist, is there an actual battle that you can participate in or is this just a historical reference?

Generally, an "immersion" thing, but the stock game tries, and other mods succeed in actually having the major battles happen near or on the date(s) mentioned, but mostly just the ones you'd see in the Data / Campaigns / Campaign folder, such as Battle of Philippine Sea, Coral Sea Battle, etc. If you drive your boat within rendering range of the participants though, they do not render, and throw things out of "balance".

Thanks. Saves me wasting fuel trying to get to the 'battle'.

If they're close by and you have the time, they can be quite entertaining, but I wouldn't go too far out of my way for them. Lurker_hlb3 probably gets closest to being somewhat accurate with the major battles, and even has some minor ones in RSRDC, but only as far as the game would let him...

It does depend on the mod. I have sailed to location of battles and found them duking it out on the surface. RSRD actually did a nice job of recreating these battles along with way better merchant traffic routing. The main thing to remember about the battles with RSRD was that if you are already there at a battle location they would not spawn correctly and it causes game issues. You have to be 15-20 km away for them to spawn. Then you could move in to help.

Spend some time going through the read me files of RSRD, TMO, Travller, OM and other mods and see what they really change. You will be pleasantly surprised with some of them.

Stock 1.5, I have waited for the radio message, and move into the area for Coral Sea.

The Ships rendered, I got most (possibly all) the "big fish" on the eastern side.

Couldn't find the rest on the western side.

As far as the others, I can't say.

Have had trouble with SH4 (and SH3) not rendering properly for the last several months due to driver/wine issues (I'm running Linux), so no more playing for me (for now).

I've been occupying my time with a bunch of (even) older games and Kerbal Space Program... Right now it's a heavily modded Mass Effect 2.
So I'm "out of the loop" for most things SH4 for now.

Still with the Wine, eh? I think I'll keep my Ubuntu at 16x and the Wine at the old one, so that I can still play my SH4 then...

Maybe you ought to find yourself an old dual-core box with 4 gig of RAM and WinXP SP2, isolate it from the world, and do SH4 (and earlier) on it...

Why when you can run windows 7 instead. Much better than XP and if you only had a dual core it will run with it fine.

Further info (in the other thread) has the strong possibility of it being driver related.

I have a a dual core with Fedora 25 which still has an older version of wine.
And, I still have Fedora 20 with 1.7.44 which everything I tried to run worked.

I didn't reinstall XP because I didn't want to fight the activation garbage.
Just need to finish re-arranging the room and get the Dual core setup so I can use it.
It's currently sitting on the desktop with the keyboard, mouse, and the 40" TV that I got for it.

Blackjack174 experienced the same thing, so I'm not alone here!

But in the mean time I've been playing other things. Like Crysis!
