If I could believe my astronomy book, then even two galaxies crashing means the collision of individual suns and planets is extremely unlikely an event, due to the space between them. I read the probability for galaxies colliding always is greater than the probability of suns or planets colliding in such Bang.

After all, in principle we speak about empty space crashing into empty space.

That both galaxies move towards each other is known since long, but the time estimation is relatively new, I think. Read what the article mentions about sideway motion.
