Default Sonar gives wrong results?

So on my last career I survived long enough to get sonar, and I tried it out. I dialed the hydrophone until I had a target, and then I pinged it.

It returned a range.

But every time you click it, you get a wildly different, smaller value. Much smaller than can be accounted for by closing speeds.

I can click a dozen times in a few seconds and cut the range in half.

What gives?

Never having used 'active sonar', besides a BUG, could it be an accurate portrayal of the inaccuracies of the equipment at the time.

Considering that different frequencies travel at different speeds through any medium (an energy impulse consists of many frequencies), and I'm not sure whether this was known at the time.

Just a thought ?

What Mods are you using - usual question

This post might shed some light on why you didn't get good results using active sonar. (The post would be more useful if it had some attribution! Sigh!)

This gives historical insight into the problems with historical sonar on uboats. Is this modeled in the game?

It looks like if you give commands through the sound man interface you can ask for precise or estimated ranges.

If you click the actual Sende button on the device, are you getting precise or estimated ranges?

According to the reference, the device was removed from the conning tower to make room for improved radar sets, which commanders believed would be more useful. If the historical device was so ineffective that operational commanders felt it was useless, and the in-game model is so ineffective you feel it is useless, then, whatever the game designers intended, the model is, in the first order, accurate. Would you prefer a highly accurate and useful model of a device that in reality didn't work? That would be a complete fiction.

It's also a complete fiction that I can shoot destroyers down the throat at will.

What I'm interested in knowing is how the game sonar actually operates.

Of course it is. Do you actually do that?

Yes, routinely.

Now, does anyone know how the game sonar actually works?

Thanks,
