i had the pleasure of visiting the USS Silversides (ss-236) and have some photos to share with my fellow members. what is the best way to post them on the board here? i have 16 photos ranging from 2 meg to 3 meg each (jpg). i do not have any cloud based storage on which to store them. (sorry, guys, i stay off the cloud.)

i appreciate any help and so will the rest of the board. :-)

Hey Mark, photo-bucket sure put a wet blanket on free image hosting in forums didn't they, several months ago... find posts with graphics and right-click to see where propbeanie and others host their images and check those sites out.

I think you have some space here in your Subsim profile but not sure how that works. I'd like to see your Silversides photographs, sure many others would too.

You could try imgur for image hosting.

ok, let's give this a try.
The USS Silversides Submarine Museum resides in Muskegon, Michigan on the eastern shore of Lake Michigan.

The Mission of the USS Silversides Submarine Museum is to honor the men and women of the military, preserve military history and provide experiences that educate the public about past and present military history and technology.

Silversides received twelve battle stars for World War II service, and was awarded one Presidential Unit Citation for cumulative action over four patrols. She is credited with sinking 23 ships, the third-most of any allied World War II submarine, behind only the USS Tang and USS Tautog. The tonnage of the ships sunk by Silversides amounted to 90,080 tons, second only to Tang's total.

Here is the range gauge on the 4" deck gun. Notice that it ends at 9800 yds.

here is the breech section of the 4 incher. due to the morning sun and deck limitations, this was the best i could do.

here is the infamous Mk14 with the Mk16 head.

Here is the 40mm AA gun. No one is allowed above the deck or the conning tower or the exterior bridge.

Here is the 20mm. Again, due to the sun and lack of available deck space, this was the best i could do.

here is the sail. Notice the two scopes and the S-band radar receiver. Search Lights too.

Who can guess what this is a photo of? (off-limits to any sub veterans)

here is the control room...diving planes area. My father spent most of three years during the war as a bowplanesman.

Galley. Due to space limitations i could not fit the coffee urn into the photo. It was the size of Rhode Island.

Enlisted bunk area. There are at least 36 bunks. there were 13 in the forward torpedo room and 12 in the aft torpedo room.

Aft Engine Room- Fairbanks Morse

Hey, KaleunMarco...

A bow towards the conning tower shot & another aft to the conning tower shot, would be nice.

You also asked for suggestions for sites to use to post pics on subsim... I use the following site for posting pics:

https://snipboard.io

Works great, gives nice pics, which you have seen that I've posted of later the last 2 months+ now... & no issues. Best of all, can use it without having to register or pay.

Great photos. Really annoying so many subs won't allows people up on the bridge gun platforms and in conning tower, takes away from the experience . I visited the Drum many times growing up and allowed it, now days like most they officially do not. However, they will usually let me up there if I ask.

SHO Re: USS Silversides...

Nice...

The Drum, down in Mobile, Al., is the same class.. Gato.

When I lived there twice, would always go there & roam around both the Drum & the Alabama (BB60). As I recall, the park added a lot of aircraft & land units, to look at, as well.

look at the size of the radar displays. it's like a five inch diameter. what is the size of your display? how about we reduced it to five inches.

i went looking for the sonar station in the control room and could not find it. probably removed. the repeater was in the attack compartment.

since my friend and i were ex-USN we were granted permission to enter the attack compartment which is dogged and chain-locked. that ladder gets steeper every year. it will always amaze me when i visit that compartment and try to visualize the attack crew at work and the lack of physical space.

there is not one soft spot in that entire submarine. when it was under attack and the crew would be jostled around from depth bombs, there is no way in hell that most of the crew would not be bruised and battered. hell, i was bruised and battered just walking through the GD boat.

I grew up in Northern Florida, about 50 miles from the Drum and Alabama, spent more time than I can recall growing up and pre covid visited once per year if not more since when lived in Louisiana it was on the way to and from, I always allotted time for a visit. I am going home in a few weeks and hope to visit. Love it and the Bama of course. Yes, they have a lot of aircraft(B-52 outside), tanks, artillery pieces and other exhibits.

Employees and volunteers are great there, Tom and Leslie have spearheaded so much amazing work on the Drum last few years.
