Default Where do I Sign up for the Eastern Front

Where do I Sign up for the Eastern Front. First of all, let me set cha up. I'm currently playing in a Type IXb sub out of Lorient. It's September 21, 1942 and I'm patrolling off the east coast of the United States in grid CA61. I've been at sea for 51 days and in grid CA61 for 11 days. there is plenty of in-bound and out-bound traffic in spite of the fact I've only sunk 5 ships for 28,856 tons. It seems that most of my sound contacts are always "long range" and past me. Motor boating around to catch up is not logical, and probably unrealistic, due to fuel consumption concerns. I have found a sweet spot in the very lower left hand corner of CA61, and I've parked my boat there and set up my ambushes. Oh and by the way, the air traffic is heavy and it seems as if there are these little patrols of 1 or 2 warships ( destroyers ) making endless runs at me too. Lots of non-stop action. Well anyway, I had 9 torpedoes remaining and along comes 2 merchants, one being an American Ore Carrier and another smaller ship in line. I do manual targeting most of the time but since I wanted to nail both ships I used Weapons Officer Assistance for this attack. So I lined up as close to 90 degrees to their tracks as I could, and was about 2.1 Km's in range. Got the shooting solution from my WO for the first ship and fired 2 torpedoes. Got the shooting solution for the second ship and fired 2 more. Then waited and watched with the <> keys. I love to watch the explosions. NOTHING ! Missed all 4 shots. And by the way the weather was ok, overcast, no rain, moderate visibility and 7ms. Darn ! Then I did something I probably shouldn't have done, but I turned 180 and still got a good shooting solution and fired …. NOTHING ! Now with only 3 torpedoes left, I had no choice but to dive to 40 meters and reload, losing all opportunity's of nailing these guys. So after reloading my remaining FWD Tube and both AFT Tubes, I retreated, surfaced and recharged my batteries. Now you ask what else could go wrong, well …. after an hour or so on the surface, I received a RADIO MESSAGE informing me of a LARGE CONVOY in, you guessed it, CA61, and the big black square popped up. I measured, it was only 60 Km's away and headed straight to me. With only 3 torpedoes left, I'm not going to do too much damage. I would love to have those 6 waisted Torpedoes back. But anyway I've kind'a set myself up to fire the 2 AFT Tubes, and set my escape run pointed to France. I'll most likely hit the resupply boat U-461 ( I think that's the boat out there in the middle of the Atlantic ), pick up a few T-1's and a splash of fuel and ride one of the convoy lines back and maybe pick off another ship or 2, if I'm lucky. Man I love this game !!!

Well, if you’re using GWX, you can always transfer to the 30th Flotilla on the Eastern Front

As to why I missed 6 shots, all torpedoes passing just behind the targeted ships, is a mystery to me. particularly the first 4 from the FWD Tubes. The 2 shots from the AFT Tubes were a stretch, I know that, but doable anyway. We all miss, but 6. 1 ship should have gone down. At a range of 2.1 Km's, my WO was really off his mark. My favorite ranges are from 1.3 Km's to 2.3 Km's, especially for convoy attacks. For convoy attacks, as soon as I fire, its scope down, turn and scoot at flank, getting as far away from my firing position as I can. When the escorts turn and start to approach, I dive to 160 meters, go to "silent running at between 60-40 RPM's (< 1Kt) and start a 3 degree port or starboard turn. With this method, I've been depth charged before, but not very often. Most the time they're at least 1 to 2 Km's off to start with, and I slip away. Depending on the results from the remainder of the patrol, I might dismiss and replace my WO upon return to Lorient.

Default more ramblings

I love talking and hearing about personal tactics, game play experiences and other player's game play opinions. It amazes me that we have players from every corner of the world and we all speak the same language, SHIII ! And what's really amazing is the non-stop work by decated modders. I often wonder if the modders ever take a nite off, just to play. I myself have been playing since 2007. I have several installs (via S3F), 1 dedicated to "DrumBeat", 1 for the Med , 2 others for the N. Atlantic and 1 for single missions, all using GWX3 with various mods combos installed and now I'm going to start a WAC5.01 career. I usually play at least 3 nites a week for about 3 hours per session and after every save, I'm pumped !!! For those that don't know me, I go by Doolar here on the forum but my name is Jerry. I have always lived in Baltimore Maryland (CA45) except for my time in the Air Force. There I was stationed at Hahn AB, Germany, Zaragoza AB, Spain, Incirlik AB, Turkey, Chung Ju AB, S Korea, Moody AFB George and finally Cairo West AB Egypt.I worked avionics on the F4-E Phantom. When I got out, I was a mailman for 34 years. I'm retired now.

Well enough about me. I see all your post all the time. Who are you girls and guys ? Please share your game play opinions, your SHIII tactics, your game play victory's , your game play losses, your mod set-up, etc. We here need more of these post.

There is a great thread "Tell us whats happening in your current campaign" It's pretty cool if you haven't read it or added to it, which I honestly haven't added to it, but I'm gonna start … Jerry

Hello Jerry,
I was happy to read about you.
I agree with you when you say that people should speak more about their experience and share their success and failures. I'm myself doing all the preparations to play a career, after having stopped to play several years ago (I don't remember how many?). I have installed NYGM with HSie and Stiebler patches. Now, I would like to set up the SH3 Patrol tool, and also SH3 Commander, because a lot of people say good things about it. When all is ready, I think I will post in the thread you have mentionned, or even create my own thread to tell you what is happening during my campaign.
Kind regards
Arnold.
