Moe Tucker - Around and Around

Interesting to hear a very different take on a Chuck Berry classic...


As fr a I know, Moe only took a lead vocal once with the VU; Lou Reed had to coax her to sing lead on this song:





The clip is from a 1993 performance in Paris; the VU were to be honored at a festival for their contributions to music and they were only supposed to appear to receive an award; the band members had not performed together for many years, primarily due to strong acrimony between Reed and Cage; When they finally got together in Paris, they began to talk among themselves and realized they were not getting any younger and they might never be able to play together again as a group; much to the delight of the festival organizers, the VU asked if they could be allowed to perform once more, for probably the last time; there were hurried rehearsals and preparations and, for that night, the VU played as a united group...

Talkin' about female drummers the first I can recall is Sheila E and her "Glamorous life" video from 80's. She also performed with Prince (You know her) and occasionally played standing up too.

Sheila E. gets her talents from a strong family tree. Her uncle is Coke Escovedo, percussionist in the band Santana; also in Santana as a percussionist is Sheila's father, the great Pete Escovedo:

I did a bit of checking on the Escovedo Brothers because my memory is not too good and I wasn't entirely sure if Sheile E. was Pete or Ckoe's daughter; in my search, I made a surprising discovery: there used to be a Punk band from San Diego CA called The Zeros; they were one of the very first punk bands in SoCal. Somehow, I got to know the band members through some of the other musicians and scenesters in the Punk circle; the bass player was a young kid named Hector and he and I would talk and drink together when we happened to run into each other; he either was about to or had just recently graduated high school and he was concerned about his future, specifically because he had a longtime girl friend and he was thinking they might get married one day; his concern was he felt being a musician was all fine and good, but, if he were going to make a life for him and his girl, he wanted to have a steady, fall-back occupation in case music didn't pan out as a lifelong career; he was kind of serious and bookish looking, and he knew I had worked in accounting and data processing, so he would ask me about the fields and if I thought he would fit in and be able to grow in the fields; I was impressed how someone so young was so well-anchored and considered. I didn't get to know his band mates well (one of them seemed to have a bit of a grudge against me), so I never really knew much about them. In my recent research, I found out one of the Zeros, Javier, is a younger brother of both Pete and Coke Escovedo; it just goes to show how small the world of musicians can be...

The last time I saw Hector, the band was going to play a gig at a massive venue, the old Elks Lodge near Downtown LA. the band was a headliner act and didn't need to go on until very late in the night. Hector had come to the Lodge very early with his girlfriend and we ran into each other; his girl had a friend of hers along for the gig, a lovely young girl, and with a good amount of time to kill, the four of us went bar hopping around the neighborhood, at one point even singing duets at a Japanese nightclub. When we went back to the Lodge, we discovered the LAPD had staged one of its then infamous raids to break up the punk concert, with much swinging of clubs and manhandling of anyone in reach. We were able to determine the LAPD, in addition to arresting a good number of people, had also confiscated the band's equipment. the last I saw of Hector was him rushing off to try and get the equipment back...

Thank you for your fine post vienna. Seems like I never figured out how big name Sheila E (and her family) really is. Of course her unquestionable talents can be witnessed by anybody.


I'm surprised the way LAPD harassed punk bands in LA. What motivated them for such mean actions. Was drugs their excuse or what? Sure our own police force too was ready for interfering local rock artists life in 70's, but not quite that extent.

BTW Sex Pistols' were not allowed to play here at all, think they were considered too vicious.
