Default GWX and NYGM

Not exactly a noob, but new to SH3. Been using GWX and think it is great! Recently came across NYGM, which seems to be similar in scope. I"d appreciate a comparison of the two. Do they change the same game elements? Are they comparable in difficulty? In realism? Are there philosophical differences between the two, as with RFB and TMO? Why did NYGM continue development when GWX was ended? Superficially, just reading release postings, they seem to be two efforts to achieve the same goal in pretty much similar ways. Are they?

And please, which do you play, and why?

I played both gwx gold and nygm and i stick to nygm.
I just love the wolfpack element in nygm, it just puts the game to another level of submarine warfare.
If you like more realism this is the mod you need

BigWalleye,
Both super mods are are excellent in their own right. I have been using GWX through its evolving versions since about 2007...obviously I love it. I recently used Multish3 so I could also try out NYGM, but I am not far enough along in it to give an intelligent opinion. I would recommend downloading both super mods and reading through the excellent PDF manuals included with both....I believe that the manuals will answer all your questions.

Also take a look at Hsie's and Stiebler's patches for the SH3.exec....they fix a few problems and add quite a bit to the SH3 experience.

An external program that most, including myself, consider a must have for SH3 is SH3Commander:

There are more, but you can get to them down the road a ways.

And of course there are also WAC and LSH3, both of which add a lot to the game.

NYGM has a slight edge on dynamics and performance, and has the advantage that Stiebler is still keeping it alive. People who favor NYGM feel that it has the most accurate gameplay.

GWX adds a whole new world to the game as far as feel goes, putting in dynamic harbors and convoys escorted by blimps, plus doing its own bit for the gameplay. GWX supporters feel that it provides the most complete balance between gameplay, graphics and overall immersion into the game.

WAC focuses on historical campaigns, and does everything possible to recreate the feel of being involved in the war.

LSH3 does its part by making the world come alive, providing possibly the best graphic experience.

All four supermods are great, and as suggested the only way to decide for yourself is to use MultiSH3 and try them all for yourself.

Also there is h.sie's super modification to the game itself, which changes everything.

And sometime in the future will be U-Boat HAHD, which looks like it's going to revolutionize everything.

And, as also mentioned, SH3 Commander will do for your career what the best supermods do for the game itself. SH3C works with any supermod, or without any, and is a world unto itself.

Currently sailing with NYGM.
I agree with SS on it's dynamics and performance. Also NYGM is much more stable than heavily modded GWX.

I play with GWX and NYGM... i choose NYGM.. really is a very good mod, for me the best supermod.

This mod haven´t a spectacular graphics, but for me it´s not very important..

NYGM and h.sie patch and Stiebler patch are unsurpassed

played with both and LSH3. i flip back and fouth depending on what i want out of the game that day and to add a little more i never have the same flotilla on each install.

GWX has more mods dedicated to it without having to go in and win merge or manually edit with a side by side comparison. NGYM has a nice no renown/tonnage requirement/price for uboat upgrades and everythig SS said about it.

Either way they both have their ups and downs and all add a new aspect to the game. every body who plays them will swear up and down about the mega mod they play though

Seeing as how you've already played GWX I'd suggest you give the others a go and see which one floats your boat the most.

Because none of them is better than the other. What happened here is actually quite simple: since we can't simulate to a 100% reality there comes a moment when you have to make design decissions and take options. GWX and NYGM went on different routes in several things, both of them however in search of the same objective of replicating reality. The results are different approaches and results in what limited field of play we have.

In the end this all means that, depending on wether you tend to favour this or the other, you will prefer one mod or the other. Sadly we can't have both things at the same time, but fortunately we have in turn a great amount of choices with all these supermods

what would be cool is if we could merge them into one supermegamod but that would probably be way to difficult

No one is interested in taking that project on when this one will be out shortly.
