Default CAOTD vs. AOTD

Is it worth playing CAOTD over the regular Dos version of AOTD?

I've only ever played AOTD but I saw a video of CAOTD on youtube and I have to say, the sharper resolution plus lighting on the ships looks awfully nice and crisp.....

What are everyone's opinions? Is CAOTD worth trying to figure out how to install?

I've played one of them, but I honestly can't remember which one. Sorry, I wish I had a better answer.

You should read this one (2nd post), it's my recent analysis by installing & playing:
http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=240392

A lot of things out-of-the-manual.
And if you find that you cannot save the game (I refer to your other post), then move the CAOD files in a non-protected aerea of your HD. It helps to have *full* computer privileges, which means you have full administrator rights on your computer, which makes all aeras fully accessible, except write-protected flash drives.

I hope you enjoy,

AOTD all the way. CAOTD is buggy. Nothing beats the cd version of AOTD.

You are referring to the install, but do you already have the files or the CD? If so, the only "tricky" part in running caotd is if you have a modern OS because you will just have to change the compability of the AODCD.EXE like in XenonSurf's post:
Quote:
... - Compatibility with Win 95;
- Run with 256 Colors;
- Deactivate desktop layout (4th box);
- Run as admin...
Hope you manage to make it work!

I'm running Aces Of The Deep For DOS under D-Fend Reloaded, and CAOD under Windows Vista! While the graphics of CAOD look better overall, I think the graphics of the AOD For Dos Looks the Best! I'm using Win98 for COAD's Compatibilty Mode and first three options on the list.

Thanks,

I think CAOD has the best graphics, but it is too buggy and real hard to set up that I will generally play AoD 1.2 + expansion over CAOD, even if CAOD has a deck gun station which is far better than the inexperienced gun crews of AoD.

Me too. I don't care about the deck gun as I never man it myself, but CAOD is to buggy vs. AOD.

I only play CAOD if I want to play in the Mediterranean Sea, there will be traffic as opposed to AODCD, I can exchange the savegames between the 2 games if saved in the bunker.

Only thing I would change with AOD if I could is to be able to start in a VII at the French bases 1940 instead of having to start with a type II all the time.

I have no interest in Type II's (nor deck or flak guns). I know via the info. on this site, AOD can be hex edited to allow this, but I don't have those skills.

Careful going back to AOD after playing SH3. Easy to get some bad habits in SH3, due to the lousy AI/damage model, etc.
Just got sunk playing a comparable situation in AOD the same way that I do in SH3 that would have been an easy escape in SH3.

Graphics aside (Obvious!), the gameplay is still hands down in favor of AOD when compared to many more modern offerings, but for me the TDC became a deal breaker. The manual TDC in modern games is a game inside the game and brings so much it's hard to ignore. Nevertheless, "pound by pound" the best all around game if you put aside the inevitable evolution of graphics, is AOD

Exactly. Though I only do fast 90 attacks with your outstanding Optics mod, so not much manual input there anyway !

In CAOD, I started a new career during the Crescendo Period and started with a Type VII. I'll have to try the DOS version next! In AOD for DOS, it starts you out in a Type VII at St. Nazaire!

Thanks!
