Default Sh 4 foel shortage

Hi, I'm on SH4 hard mode, having trouble getting back to base with over half a tank of diesel. Have to call in to Midway after leaving Pearl to refill otherwise cannot get to target. Any ideas?

First thought that come to my mind is: SLOW DOWN!

10kts speed will usually get you over 10,000 miles, in some boats a lot more.
If running at Full or Flank your Mileage drops WAAAAY down.

mikesn9 is correct. Slow down and cruise at 10 knots. Historically speaking most boats when leaving Pearl Harbor on patrol would stop at Midway and top off their fuel tanks before departing on patrol for Empire waters or beyond. Once you leave Midway conserve fuel and cruise at 10 knots to your patrol area. Once you reach your patrol area use 10 knots to patrol your area and use higher speeds when chasing targets.

... embarrassed voice of experience says to top off at Midway on the return trip also, so that you don't have to do like someone I know, and give up on a career because you run out of fuel between Midway & Pearl. I had passed closeby to Midway also, probably less than 4 hours South... - I never pass closeby ~any~ base without topping off anymore.

If you're confident in editing, add these changes.
Ctrl-w gives you the weather up top.
Shift-g will give you estimated range on the fuel you have left.
Always copy the file to a safe place first, in case you mess up.
( I never make mistakes. Once I thought I did, but I was wrong)
As you use the fuel range, you'll notice big differences in range between charging/not charging batteries.
After you go to 1.5, TMO/TMOwtw have this change incorporated in the game already.

Here is the info:

Fuel range at current speed:
So, in: \Data\Cfg\Commands.cfg
Commands.cfg (open with a text editor like Notepad
)

[Cmd257] <------------------ Step #1: Find "[Cmd257]
"
Name=Report_time_to_turn
Ctxt=1
MnID=0x3F250002
Key0=0x47,s,"Shift+G" <--------- Step #2:
Add this string

----------------------------------------------------------------------
If you also want the 'Weather Report' "Ctrl+W" make this [Cmd261] edit:

[Cmd261]
Name=Report_weather
Ctxt=1
MnID=0x3F250006
Key0=0x57,c,"Ctrl+W" <--------- Step #3:
Add this string

----------------------------------------------------------------------
To remember "Shift+G" and "Ctrl+W" add them to your in-Game F1 Help file:
In: Data\Menu\Help\Help.cfg
Help.cfg (open with a text editor like
Notepad
, and find the 'OTHER CONTROLS' section:

[Chapter1.Phrase6]
Phrase=<b>OTHER CONTROLS</b>| NumPad - Decrease Time Compression| NumPad + Increase Time Compression| Backspace Pause|

-------------------------------
Step #4
: and add Ctrl+W & Shift+G:

[Chapter1.Phrase6]
Phrase=<b>OTHER CONTROLS</b>| Ctrl+W Weather Report| Shift+G
Maximum
range at current speed| NumPad - Decrease Time Compression| NumPad + Increase Time Compression| Backspace Pause|

----------------------------------------------------------------------
As always back up any files you edit in case you make a mistake

Yep... When based at Pearl early in the war, my routine is to go to Midway at STANDARD speed, refuel and conduct the mission at 10 kt, return to Midway for fuel and return to Pearl at STANDARD... Later in the war, other refueling options are available that are closer than Pearl... Also, transferring to Fremantle later in the war opens up more refueling options, allowing more shooting time.
