Because I performed greatly on the sea, they gave me USS Tuna, but just for one patrol....Here is what happened during that cruise....
I had last four torpedoes in my aft tubes and those two tankers were in such position, that I meneuvered my aft 90 degrees on them and fired two torps on each tanker. All torps hit, both tankers went down. After i surfaced I saw this view..... And then we've got the new love.....USS DRUM!!!Here she is leaving Pearl Harbor.

I also got Drum after three patrols in Tambor (I think it was). So far I've made 5 war patrols with her sinking just over 200 000 tons (including Yamato on the third patrol in Drum). I'm very proud of both myself and the Drum considering this is my first full career using manual TDC.

I started the career in Porpoise Class - USS Perch.Made three patrols with her, then I got Tambor Class - USS Tuna for one patrol so now my fifth patrol is still in progress and it's with USS Drum - Gato Class.Love patrols in SH4 - thank to the possibility to visit for example Midway for resupply, those patrols are pretty long....

PATROL REPORT U.S.S. POLLACK SS-180 1ST. WAR PATROL DECEMBER 10, 1941 – FEBRUARY 1, 1942 LCDR. R. E. CHAMBERLAIN, COMMANDING DEC. 10, 1941 1625 Departure Pearl Harbor, TH with orders to insert agent into Katsuura, Japan. Maneuvering Watch set. 1637 Cleared harbor and put to sea. Relieved Maneuvering Watch. Underway at 2/3 Bell, making 11 Knots. Set course to Midway Island for fuel stop. DEC. 11, 1941 1800 Received radio message that Germany and Italy have declared war on the United States! Also, Japanese forces were turned back at Wake Island by our forces. Way to go! DEC. 12, 1941 1803 Watch spotted a freighter off our port beam heading ESE. We do not think that he saw us. We continued course and speed as not to make contact. 22.38.7N, 164.47.5W. 2101 Received Fox Traffic from COMSUBPAC advising Japanese invasion of Borneo. DEC. 16, 1941 0600 Refueled at Midway Island. Proceeding West. Heavy seas. 2003 Received Fox Traffic from COMSUBPAC advising Japanese landing on Borneo. DEC. 23, 1941 1800 Received Fox Traffic from COMSUBPAC advising that a second Japanese attempt to take Wake Island was successful. We ran on the surface today at STANDARD Bell in an attempt to make up some time. There was nothing sighted all day. DEC. 25, 1941 0753 Merry Christmas! It is hard to keep in good spirits, as many of the crewmembers are still upset over losing Wake Island. We have been at sea for 15 days, and expect to make our objective in about 10 days. I will be glad to drop this guy off! The crew is anxious to bring the fight to the Japs. I am sure they will get their chance soon enough. Fuel supply at 80%. Munitions at 100%. Maintaining radio silence. We are still in heavy seas, and our speed has been averaging at about 7 Knots on the surface. DEC. 26, 1941 2048 Changing course to heading 294 for better sea keeping. This will place us North of our objective, but will allow us to make better headway with the waves. Fuel is at 79%, and we are at STANDARD Bell making 14 Knots. Christmas dinner was excellent, and the leftovers even better! JAN. 5, 1942 0210 Arrived at our objective off the Katsuura coast. All stop submerged then slowly raised to periscope depth. No contacts observed, we surfaced and deployed the agent in a rubber raft. Submerged to periscope depth to observe agent and watch for enemy contact. No enemy observed, insertion was a success! 2229 Made contact with Japanese freighter Kasagisan Maru. Reported contact to COMSUBPAC and awaited orders. Received orders to engage enemy freighter. Freighter changed course, new solution developed for a shot from the stern tubes. Two fish from stern at high angle made contact! The ship exploded in a magnificent fashion, must have been carrying ammunition. Kasagisan Maru immediately sank with all hands, no survivors. 2,436 tons. 2232 Upon report of our success to COMSUBPAC, we received orders to deploy to the East China Sea for patrol. By 2235, we had our course plotted and were underway. Our current fuel status is at 60%, and we are making 11 Knots on heading 235. JAN. 6, 1942 0007 Watch detected a ship moving NE, plotted a course to intercept and identify. 0755 Watch reported a small enemy convoy consisting of two large modern composite freighters. Reported to COMSUBPAC and awaited orders. 0810 Began surface attack run. At 0817 sunk Nagara Maru with the deck gun. 7,235 tons. Turned and went after the other freighter. Sunk with deck gun at 0819. 7,190 tons. Lifeboats in the water. We left the area and resumed patrol. JAN. 7, 1942 0818 Engaged Japanese convoy with numerous merchants escorted by two destroyers. Setup on two merchant ships, expended two torpedoes each. No hits! Left the rear of the convoy running silent. Reloaded tubes and resumed patrol. JAN. 9, 1942 0142 Watch spotted a huge European liner, we plot course to intercept and identify. 0200 Engage liner Conte Verde with the deck gun. She went down with all hands. 18,765 tons. JAN. 10, 1942 1735 Arrive to station in East China Sea. Sonar reports a contact, fast screws. Contact is identified as a warship. We plot course to intercept and investigate. 1900 Warship contact has changed course, is long range and heading away from us. We break off the chase and resume patrol. JAN. 15, 1942 1951 Engaged Japanese merchant ship Akita Maru with two torpedoes. One hit and one dud. Sunk with deck gun. 4,169 tons. JAN. 16, 1942 1353 Crash dive to avoid two aircraft flying North. We are making our way home. May have enough fuel to make Midway Island. JAN. 29, 1942 0430 Arrive Midway Island, and carefully make way into harbor. Two PT boats had collided near the entrance and are ablaze. All crew are off the boats, so no assistance from our boat was required. We refit with fuel and torpedoes and decide to wait for daylight before we depart. 0645 Depart Midway Island bound for Pearl Harbor, TH. FEB. 1, 1942 1022 Approaching Pearl Harbor, TH. Set maneuvering watch before entering channel. 1100 At dock, Pearl Harbor, TH. End of patrol. Total tonnage sunk, 39,795 tons. Respectfully, LCDR. R. E. Chamberlain U.S.S. Pollack SS-180 |
