Are there any upgrades available for the batteries?

I can't think of one off the top of my head, though I'm sure someone has done some noodling in those settings. The game's "Game Play" settings have tick boxes for the compressed air, fuel, battery, etc., if you want to set those to "Unlimited" by un-ticking the boxes. That way, you wouldn't have to worry about those settings while you get used to the game. It's "arcade", but it'll allow you to concentrate on targeting and such until you get used to the way things work in the game. You can use the "Options" choice from the Main Menu, or click on the Radio in the upper left of the Office room in the campaign setting before you go out on patrol. If I'm remembering correctly, the "Easy" setting of a Career will set them that way for you.

There are no upgrades for the batteries AFAIK. You just have to be conservative with them (you can only go at flank speed for a little under an hour on battery power). Generally you don't want to go over 1/3 in the vicinity of an escort, 2/3 if you're only forced under by an aircraft.
